4 X 4 ?

Any of you backyard engineers ever toyed with the idea of converting one of these machines to a four wheel drive ?

I'd be lying if I said I never thought about it .

Seems like it might be a fun project for a machine that wasn't slated to be restored .

Been throwing the idea around for a while now of taking a D series and doing it.  The biggest problem I'm having is locating a suitable front axle out of a sub compact utility tractor. I actually talked to a local green/yellow and also a Massey Ferguson dealer about getting a complete front 4WD assembly. JD wanted $3300 and MF wanted $1999 for theirs. Needless to say I stopped at that point. I'm not spending that kind of money. Eventually a used one will show up  for the right cost. The other option would be to buy a complete used SCUT and take all the sheet metal from a D an put it on that tractor. I would sooner do a FWA axle on a D though.

Bob does great work but I'm more interested on doing a non articulator. I think it would be cool to see a regular tracor with a FWA axle under it.

Those  articulated machines are awesome , but I'm with hodge71 on this .

I remember seeing a 4x4 simplicity legacy? At a local tractor shop maybe last year, in passing I thought to myself how hard would it be to put one on the front of my 416-8.......

   Have you considered taking a  Rear end and cutting the axils off short, use universals from a 1" or 1 1/8" round shaft light duty PTO and make a pair of hinged blocks with two flanged pillow blocks on the outer  halves and hubs for the wheels at the end. The inner halves would be attached to the rear front end. Replace the single pulley on the rear with a double and run a belt from front to rear. If you want to run smaller wheels up front this could be done with pulley size changes.

 

I hope you can pull this off, I would love to see it! 100 percen   4X4.

So.... how bad is the torque-steer ?

Here's a pic of Bob's 264 with 4x4 front assist conversion, he later tore it down & rebuilt it as the articulated 264x4 you see further up in Jason's post.

Yes, it is... that post was from 2011, before the crash/conversion. That tractor belongs to member dave24.
