Scratch build yard trailer

I am starting on a build of a trailer. Dump style, haven't figured out if I want to go leaf spring or hard mount axle. but any way here is the start. I figured leaf spring so when I take the kids for a ride it's nice and soft instead of bouncing around.

 

42" x 60" is the size, I plan on using 13" wheels on 1" taperd bearing hubs, 4 or 5 lug (I have both).

It is my work place. I mean home......... well I am their a whole bunch anyway. Just a short 20 years...20 long years..It is nice having all the right tools at hand. May as well be my home. I run a Scenic shop so I have all the good wood tools also.

Donor boat trailer axle. Decided to go non-leaf spring. I figured if I used the leaf springs it would put the pivot point to far from where I wanted it. Sectioned the axle 10 inches and presto just what I needed. I will be using larger wheels and tires on it.

It will get a standard 2" ball hitch mounted on it. For that I will fab a new hitch for the tractor to convert the orig. into a Standard 2" receiver. I move my boats around all the time so if I make every thing the same it would be a lot easier. I can just pull the ball off my truck and slide it into the receiver on the tractor...

I am thinking red frame with either oak or mahogany for the side boards stained and pollied. I am going for the old look. It should last a few years. More or less just to pull the kids around and to have something that goes with the 69 Electro.

 

More to come. Have to source some wood now.

As fast as you work you will be doing hayrides for Halloween with no problem!  Looking great so far and will be looking forward to seeing more.

All welded up and on the truck to go home for some paint.

 

larger wheels and tires are on also.

Don't think I am going to use the ply on the floor thinking I may just stick with some oak planks and seal them real good.

 We have a supplier down here I can get red oak rough sawn 1"thick  x 8" wide for 2$/foot. If I need to I can plane it down thinner ... I am still thinking Mahogany, that's 6$/foot...good thing I don't need that much.. same size rough as well. The mahogany will not dry out and rot like the oak and it looks way better stained and cleared.

Well its done but I exceeded my up limit so no pics for a while

..

Until I figure out how to delete some anyway.

 

I know exactly where the winery is been there a few times for the tasting and stomping. Great place.

 

Glad to see another southern horse owner down here I was starting to think they didn't exist.

ok here we go... Woke up this morning with a pile of raw wood in my truck that needed to be sealed.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Just need to pick up 2" hitch and done..

 

Decided to go with Maple Ply stained and cleared all sides at this time until I get the cash to go buy the rough Mahogany...I still think it looks damn good..

The lock pin is one we use on Broadway show scenery for locking moving wagons on stage.

 

I was actually looking into electric dump but we will see.

 

As for Hydro, can it be run off the pump from an Electro 12?

A tip about that tree... don't plant it anywhere that the berries can fall on your pavement, they stain concrete pretty good... and don't plant it where ppl can walk in the berries and track them into the house.

I didn't know there was a 'fruitless' variety.

 

There is also a variety with WHITE berries, we have one bordering out property, it's still messy though!
