Wheel Horse Year and Model

Recommended Posts

brang

Hi everyone,

I have returned, John Deere did not do it for me.  :)

I have recently purchased a few Wheel Horse tractors over the weekend and was hoping someone could tell me what year and model they are.  Look forward to sharing more as my projects progress.  The 12hp I ran and cut grass for about a half hour.  When I pulled it back into the garage there was oil dripping from the engine.  It cut like a champ and the hydro transmission is incredible!

First one is a C model.  Should have a metal tag just to the right of the opening above the left foot rest.  The model and serial number will be on the metal tag.

Second should have a metal tag right about the lift handle local/set.  It looks like an 8 HP Kohler so could a 1973 to 1975.

Post them and you will get you answer.

Top picture looks like a 1978 or 79 C121 with hydro lift, and the bottom looks like something prior to 1969 with an 8 hp and the wrong gas tank. Maybe an 857? Steering wheel looks like a 3 spoker from a Lawn Ranger. Added on starter button on the side of the engine is not original.

Any ID tags? Bottom tractor should have one under the dash, and the other one should be on the hood stand somewhere.

Thanks you all for the quick answers and suggestions.  I will look for those tags.  I have one more I need to post the picture.  The guy who I bought these from said they were  from the 60's but could not find a match. I sure hope I didn't mess up the engine on the hydro........

"The 12hp I ran and cut grass for about a half hour.  When I pulled it back into the garage there was oil dripping from the engine."

I picked one up cheap with the same oil drip, drip, drip.

Decided to try the easy way out. Washed the engine, clean of oil.

Couldn't find the leak. Ran the engine.

Oil was leakin' from the dipstick tube mount, loose bolts, a missing bolt, blown gasket.

Replaced all. End of leaky leak. Phew, did I luck out! :)

Cleaned the engine again. Still clean a year or two later!

I don't think the top one is a C 121 as they didn't have the starter generator and they were 8 speeds. Looks like a 36" deck, nice tractor.

it's defiantly a 78 or 79 possibly a 77 can't remember which tower a 77 used and it is a C1x1 something or another the starter generator motor was clearly a trans-plant. the last starter generator motor rolled off the wheel horse assembly-line in the late 60's

I'm thinking the first one is a 76-77 based on one I had. The steering wheel doesn't look right though. It looks like is came off an older unit. The starter is definitely not original. You can see the buldged area on the engine shrould where the original starter would go.

The hood stand is definitely a 1978/79, and the gas tank is under the seat. A closer inspection reveals that the mounts are there for the cradle, but there is no cradle in use. So the Starter generator engine would have to be a transplant mounted directly to the frame. Could have been a C-121, C-141, or C-161 since all three came in an automatic version.

Apparently I don't have enough coffee im me this morning. Very true on all points Bob. I thought 77 was the last year for that style hood decal. Correct?? Maybe an older hood or decals??

Could also be a transplanted hood or decal. Looks like it might be a repaint as well. Also there are no tail lights.
