Terry M-(Moderator) 2,204 #1 Posted August 26, 2013 I recently bought a new "Tecumseh carburetor through an Ebay store for the HH60 engine installed on my 606. Well, to get to the point.. after installing it and having some issues with the engine, I removed it to see if its actually adjusted ok . It was then that I noiticed that it looks identical ,in every detail, to a cheaper $40. off brand carb that I bought for one of my lawn rangers. And the box that it was in had only a computer generated generic i.d sticker on it.( not your normal looking tecumseh product box) So my question is....How can you tell the difference so a person knows they're gettiing an actual new OEM Tecumseh carb??? any help appriciated.. zanepetty 117 #2 Posted August 26, 2013 Did the seller advertise it as a genuine Tecumseh part?
VinsRJ 723 #3 Posted August 26, 2013 Did the seller advertise it as a genuine Tecumseh part? On flea-bay that doesn't mean a thing...
Terry M-(Moderator) 2,204 #4 Posted August 26, 2013 Did the seller advertise it as a genuine Tecumseh part? Yes, It was stated as a "genuine Tecumseh carburetor"... And it might be. just happen to notice they looked identical to each other(except for the 120+% price difference). . you would think I could find something stamped Tecumseh or something? It's the first "Genuine" Tecumseh carb I've bought. just seems a little suspect....but maybe it's just me.
zanepetty 117 #5 Posted August 26, 2013 That's a little fishy. MAybe if you want to be sure you could return it and order it from a reliable source.
Lane Ranger 11,125 #6 Posted August 26, 2013 There are still genuine Tecumseh carbs out there for the H-60 and HH-60 motors. I have purchased some on Ebay and I have purchased non-Tecumseh carbs on EBAY for the H-60 motor too. I am not a small engine expert but the Chinese knockoffs are pretty good running carbs on my one H-60 motor I have it on. I don't think the knock-off carb has as many adjustments but it seems to do as well as the Tecumseh model I paid almost twice as much for. On EBAY it is always buyer beware and ask a lot of questions if you have any doublet about an item. I have sold and bought on Ebay for a number of years and sometimes as a seller I don't know all the details about what I am selling. I think that is a reason to respect a buyers question when he asks one about an item for sale.
SousaKerry 502 #7 Posted August 26, 2013 Could well be a counterfeit. I know in the industrial markets I work in we have had to be real careful with the bearings we get in. You would be surprised at how many times we have rejected bearings from supposedly legitimate businesses that the markings did not match and the box was correct. Them phonies will run about a week and tie up. Of course the other side of the coin is Tecumseh in it's final days may have contracted the work out to China and thus gave them the designs. Once China makes a product they own the design according to their laws and they will keep any equipment you send over to make it. Your company will be tied up in court for years fighting to get your designs back and in the meantime they will copy the heck out of them change everything 5% and call it theirs.... anyways buyer beware as always with ePay. 546cowboy 301 #8 Posted August 29, 2013 From my own recent experience I did buy a new carb for an HH60 and I don't believe it was made by Tecumseh but it works great. I also have a problem with a HH-120 carb and no one has one of those. Discontinued they say but they are listed on many parts stores on-line. When you order one for $100+ with shipping you will get an email two days later saying it is not available. Why the heck don't they take the thing off their web site then? Tecumseh never had a decent carb on anything the ever built.
Terry M-(Moderator) 2,204 #9 Posted August 30, 2013 I talked to the seller and they assured me it was genuine Tecumseh O.E. - I guess I'll just see how it works out. Maybe the china replacements are just that good.
