zanepetty 117 #1 Posted August 24, 2013 Hello again all, I noticed the axle on my 753 sticks out a little more on one side than the other. Not sure if that's a problem or not just thought I'd ask. Also what rear end oils do you guys like? Thanks! Zane
pfrederi 17,895 #2 Posted August 24, 2013 How much in and out movement is there?? 90w
zanepetty 117 #3 Posted August 24, 2013 Well how can I tell? Jack it up and push on it or take the wheels off?
JimD 3,345 #4 Posted August 24, 2013 Yes, jack it up ans push/pull the axle in and out. There shouldn't be more than 1/8 of an inch end play. If by "sticks out more" you mean that the axle comes through the wheel, then you need to loosen the set screw (bolt), pull the hub out till the axle is flush with the outer surface of the hub, and re-tighten the bolt on the woodruff key. chazm 413 #5 Posted August 24, 2013 (edited) yes , jack it up , grab the wheel/tire & see if it moves in & out . If it does the set screws in the hub aren't tight & holding. As far as gear lube I run 50w but I think most guys run 80/90w Good luck chasm looks like JIM beat me to the punch Edited August 24, 2013 by chasm
zanepetty 117 #6 Posted August 24, 2013 So worst case scenario I just do what you guys said to center it? If there ends up being play does that mean bad news?
zanepetty 117 #7 Posted August 24, 2013 Not more than 1/8 of an inch of play. One more question fellas: if I leave my tractor sitting for a while it grinds a little bit into the first gear I put it in. Not bad but just a little. I guess its due to the oil settling when it sits. I guess this isn't a big deal either just thought I'd mention it to you guys. Thanks in advance!
Lane Ranger 10,992 #8 Posted August 24, 2013 Clutch adjustment could be needed , belt could be worn , belt guard tabs could need adjusting , and transmission fluid could be a little low. These are a couple of things that could cause the grinding of the gears!
rmaynard 15,621 #9 Posted August 24, 2013 Grinding occurs when the input pulley to the transmission is not completely stopped. As mentioned above, any one of several reasons could be the culprit.
zanepetty 117 #10 Posted August 24, 2013 OK. I'm new to the wheel horse world so how should I start? And like I said its only the first gear I put it in upon start up so I thought it might just be that the oil isn't on all the gears yet?
Jeff-C175 7,203 #11 Posted August 24, 2013 When you go to put it into gear wait a few seconds longer after you push the clutch before putting in gear and see what that does for you.
zanepetty 117 #12 Posted August 24, 2013 OK great I'll try that
buckrancher 2,694 #13 Posted August 25, 2013 is the tab on the bottom front side of the belt guard there?
zanepetty 117 #14 Posted August 25, 2013 Yes I believe it is. I'm not with it right now but I'm pretty sure it is.
stevasaurus 22,881 #15 Posted August 27, 2013 It has nothing to do with oil on the gears (or not) after sitting. It is only a matter of having the input pulley at a complete stop before you shift. The tabs, belt or you trying to shift without waiting for the pulley to stop is the culprit.
zanepetty 117 #16 Posted August 27, 2013 OK. I'm not sure of how to adjust them..any advice? Sorry for all the questions.
stevasaurus 22,881 #17 Posted August 27, 2013 The only thing you can adjust or fix is the tabs on the guard. When you start it, look and see if the belt gets slack in it when you push in the clutch pedal. You should see the belt slipping around the drive pulley on the engine. The tabs force the slack toward the engine pulley. You stated that you can shift without grinding afterwards, so it is probably not a stretched belt. There are some threads concerning the tabs on the guard and how to adjust them if you need .
zanepetty 117 #18 Posted August 27, 2013 I will need it. I'll have to check it out! I wanna get it adjusted.:)
stevasaurus 22,881 #19 Posted August 28, 2013 Don't adjust it if it is OK. You can't fix it if it is not broke. One other thing you might try...cleaning the grooves in all 3 of the pulleys...maybe they have some dirt or grease in them and is causing the sticking. Use a steel wool pad that is soaked in mineral spirits and then wipe dry. Mineral spirits is not oily like diesel or kerosene.
zanepetty 117 #20 Posted August 28, 2013 OK. I'll try that. Thanks!:)
buckrancher 2,694 #21 Posted August 28, 2013 when the belt is tight (clutch pedal out) the tab on the bottom edge of the belt guard should just about touch the belt so that when you step on the clutch pedal the tab forces the slack in the belt froward and away from the triple pulley so it slips and stops moving so you can shift without grinding gears Brian
zanepetty 117 #22 Posted August 28, 2013 I can't wait to try this. I haven't gotten a chance yet
zanepetty 117 #23 Posted August 29, 2013 With the clutch pushed in, while the tractor is in neutral, it still spins. If the tractor is in a gear and I push in the clutch it doesn't spin. So does that mean its the tabs?
stevasaurus 22,881 #24 Posted August 29, 2013 It is the little bit of resistance between being in neutral or not in the trans. You can easily turn the input pulley when it is in neutral. Try cleaning those pulleys like I said, and take a good look at the belt guard tabs while you have it off. Adjust them like was mentioned above if you want...you can always adjust them back. Remember, the belt guard has to be on to shift the transmission.
zanepetty 117 #25 Posted August 29, 2013 I'm going to try to clean the pulleys right now. I hope this works:/
