Compressor Oil

I just set up a big two stage commercial Compressor that was my Dads on are farm. It Is what I would call almost new. He used it very little. It's time to change the oil in the Compressor. I can't find the manual and have searched on the net. Have found more answers and opinion's than I care to share.

 

So what oil should be in there and what weight. I have never changed compressor oil before. Don't know if you put Non-Detergent in there or not. One other problem is it is used in a non heated barn. Don't know if to put a multi grade in or not. That thing get hot when its pumping.

We use straight 30wt non detergent oil in ours at work

At the foundry we use Mobile compressor oil in the small compressors. Its non foaming ......just my 2 cents worth

I am currently using amsoil synthetic air compressor oil 30/40 it's working great but I may need to go to a lighter viscosity this winter probably sae 20 since my shop is not always heated.  It is a bit expensive but a lot cheaper than a pump rebuild, I am running a Champion 2 stage with an 80 gallon tank....it was probably built sometime in the 1970's.  If it is running hot I would try some synthetic oil and see if it reduces your pump temperature mine runs cool enough that I can put my hands anywhere on the pump.

Wow you can put your hands on it. I can touch mine but not very long it gets warm. I was thinking maybe something like Amsoil. It's an upright and the drain plug will need some sort of chute made to deflect the oil or it's going to run down the tank. Thanks for all the repllys.

I use Amsoil synthetic in my 60 gal upright. Unheated and starts every time!
