Make sure your condenser is good and wired to the - side of the coil.

Replace with a new one is the best way. They don't cost much and could be a cheap fix.

you have the carb set up right chances are your fuel/ carb isn't the problem next thing is points and condenser. the points are like the timing on a car if they are off by the slightest amount then you will not spark at the perfect time, hence the sputter. So having that been said the easiest and relatively cheapest fix is points and condenser just wire on the new condenser in place of the old one install new points and gap them to .020 and she should purr like a kitten.

When my 701 first started after my rebuild, it spit and sputtered. I found that the main metering valve (the long adjusting screw on top of the carburetor) had a piece of crud lodged inside the tube. After cleaning it again, which I thought I had done properly the first time, the engine purred like a kitten.

When you say new carb, it is brand new or just a newly rebuilt carb?

Could be a weak fuel pump.

Don't know if you tried changing the spark plug or not but it's an easy try and is the troublemaker way to often. I use one that I know is good. Usually one from another tractor as every once in a while I get a new one that is bad.

Also, as Paul said, make sure that the points and condenser are hooked to the negative side of the coil.
