New guy with a 312-8 "Project"

Hello all,

I purchased my 312-8 in the spring of 2010.  I made the mistake of purchasing it sight unseen.  My dad looked at it, heard it run and watched it "mow".  It ran out of fuel while the seller was bringing it back up towards his house.  While dad informed me it smoked a little, he said he thought it was still a decent buy.  We showed up the following weekend with a trailer and brought it home.  I put gas in it when we got it home and immediately got a little sick to my stomach.  When I fired it up, I noticed it smoked more than a "little", in my opinion.

Regardless of that, I backed it off the trailer and started to mow.  The first thing I noticed was that it seemed to cut really low.  Thankfully I was cutting my back lot that most people can't see, so I kept going.  As I kept mowing, I noticed the blades kept slowing to a stop.  I assume the deck clutch is out of adjustment.  I decided to drop down a gear and continue on.  A little while later I suddenly lost all engine power and noticed gas spitting out of the carburetor as the engine was dying.  I could not get the tractor to re-fire until it cooled down for quite some time.

Fast forward to 8/17/13 and I was finally able to bring the old girl home.  Between mid-2011 and now I sold my house, my fiancees (now my wife) house and bought another house for our family.  Unfortunately the Wheel Horse sat in outside storage for about 2 years.  The right rear tire was toast way back then and it definitely shot now.  It will hold air long enough to get it onto a trailer and not much longer than that.  The right front tire was flat as well, but it has always had a slow leak.

At any rate, I need to get it running again to go through all of the systems before I pull the engine off of the frame for a rebuild.  I'd like to get everything else mechanically sound before I do the engine.  I plan on doing a cosmetic restoration (paint, decals, seat) and as much mechanical and electrical restoration as I have to in order to have a solid, reliable tractor again.

I have posted a topic asking some questions about the old girl.  That thread is located here if you might have any insight:

Regards,

Tom
