8hp briggs wheel horse or troy bilt (or both)?

Recommended Posts

bean

I bought this 8hp briggs from a neighbor. it needs the carb cleaned (maybe, I haven't tried to start it yet)).

he said it came from a troy bilt horse tiller. I was wondering if it would also fit an 800 special or other briggs powered wh

 the # is 195432 0278 01

it has a shaft that is 1 1/8" for the first inch, then steps down to 1".

looks to be in good shape. sat on a garage shelf forever.   post-5404-0-19528700-1376003405_thumb.jp

I would think it would fit most any smaller Briggs powered Horse as they have the 1" shaft.

The Commando 800 used an 8hp Kohler with a 1"shaft shaft, so it might just drop in if the vertical height is the same. Shimming it up or down is an option too.

that stepped shaft has me wondering if you could install a pto.   it's 1- 1/8" for the 1st inch, which is the size of the kohler 10-16hp's.

the remainder is 1", which is the size of the kohler 8hp.  maybe a combination of the 2 pto's

Maybe try a mock up and see how it aligns. The crank can be turned down if necessary.

The motor "looks" good...use it if you can.

it is in good shape, but I sold it. :)

actually, I took off the shroud to clean the starter recoil , and can tell you that it is not in the same league as a k series kohler.  the sheet metal is much thinner  , as well as the bits and pieces of the engine. I know the crank, bearings, etc on the briggs are up to the task, it's just all the little attention-to-detail  things that stand out.

I was talking to a gentleman about a k series that he had, and he made the comment that there will never be another engine built like it again. I think he is right. look at the k141. who would build a cast iron 6 hp engine that weighs 70 lbs and  could probably last 100 yrs, with maintenance and a few refresheners along the way.

I don't know what Troy-Bilt Tiller that engine would have come off, the PTO crankshaft end on a Troy-Bilt is 2 5/16" long, and 3/4 inch in diameter.

Rick,

it isn't from a troy bilt. the gentleman that I bought it from thought that it was. he has a troy bilt horse and bought this as a replacement. he just assumed that because they looked the same, it would fit, but the 1" shaft is the wrong size. I was on the troy bilt site and was told that several people have had their pulleys bore to 1" to fit this particular engine. I sold it for $50. it it was from a troy bilt tiller, it would be worth $200

I goofed, too when I bought a Kohler Magnum 8 without looking closely. It has a 1" shaft, and is not drilled for the 2 9/16" mounting bolt pattern. The bosses are there, but not drilled. I will take the engine and a spare Horse motor mount to my machinist and get his take on the deal....I have as many Troy-Bilt Horses as I do Wheel Horses!

These would have came off of Troy's Super Tomohawk Mulcher I believe. Mine had this B&S SAE J607 8HP
