squonk 41,017 #1 Posted July 30, 2013 (edited) The orginal hood on Marvin my C-145 was terrible. But the RF corner was creased so I didn't think to much of it because I was planning on getting another hood. I got a nice hood at the show and it has the same fitting problem. I have to adjust it at the hinges all the way forward so the latching end doesn't jam itself into the hood stand. Adjusted like this the little frame thingies that hold the hood when open don't catch the hood edge so when the hood opens, it goes all the way so the hood hits the ground. Almost feels like the hood stand is to far forward. Is there any adjustment there? Edited July 30, 2013 by squonk
Martin 2,131 #2 Posted July 30, 2013 (edited) no adjustment at the hoodstand unless you want to open up all the mounting holes. i understand your frustration, my c125 hood drove me nuts getting it to fit half decent and its still no where near right. if i do some driving where the frame twists it pops out of place...... this part of my build has a few pics, look at them up close and you can see the alignment issues. after using it for 6 months the hood rubs on the dash where its close in the pics. i just try to ignore it and enjoy the tractor.......... if you are going to repaint it get the hood exactly where it should be and grind the gap right to get it looking better. those hood catches really pull the thin hood around as well. its not an ideal system, but with some work and yelling at the thing, you can get it half reasonable..... squonk 41,017 #3 Posted July 30, 2013 (edited) I all ready yelled at and painted it. Maybe drive down a rough road at 60 clicks! Your ill fitting hood fits much better tan mine. If I adjust the hinges so the stays hold the hood, the latch end over laps by almost a half inch. Edited July 31, 2013 by squonk
AMC RULES 37,127 #4 Posted July 31, 2013 Try sixty clicks for sixty K's...that'll fix it.
Martin 2,131 #5 Posted July 31, 2013 (edited) Your ill fitting hood fits much better tan mine. If I adjust the hinges so the stays hold the hood, the latch end over laps by almost a half inch. i have roughly 10 hours in that area getting that thing reasonably straight. my hood was the problem, if you go back in the thread you can see how bad it was. but, sometimes even straight parts don't fit right when you 'mix and match'....... i always fit everything before paint, most of the hoods on my rebuilds have needed twisting or pushing and bending in some way or another to get looking better...... if the hood is too long at the hood stand with the hood pivot adjusted correctly, sometimes a good push forward while sitting on the tractor, grabbing it just in front of the hood stand to tweak it at the grill hood intersection can help get it fitting better, just don't push it too far or you will regret it big time..... you could stand at the front and pull the hood forward to do the same thing. you just want to change the hood/grill angle slightly...... AMC RULES 37,127 #6 Posted July 31, 2013 Speaking of which...reminds me of a little round hood I know.
Kelly 1,029 #7 Posted July 31, 2013 Martin already said it, but with the hood off, place the lower front edge on the ground, with the top of the nose off the ground 8-10" grab the back of the hood where it meets the hood stand, while standing behind it and give it a good push, the sides where the top is welded, will bow out, that will make the hood shorter, so to speak, the black hoods have issues with the welds at the front sides breaking, I've soon many of them broke, be sure that is not a issue also. I just last night swapped a hood on my C-195 diesel with one off a C-85 and had to put a pretty good twist in it to make it shut square, but it fit the C-85 pretty good, and the hood on the C-195 fit so not sure what the issue was, but fits good now. squonk 41,017 #8 Posted July 31, 2013 Good advice. I'll give it a try. I'm not so worried about the hood stand end. But I want it to latch and have the hood stays hold the hood when open.
Kelly 1,029 #9 Posted July 31, 2013 if you do as I said it will make the bottom of the hood closer to the back, if you measure from the bottom corner to the back top corner and check it with your old hood you might find it longer on the new hood, bending it will bring the bottom back, and you should be able to move the hood back to make the hinges catch, this is the stuff I do out of habit, from working in a bodyshop for near 30 years. Marv 919 #10 Posted July 31, 2013 I have the same problem with my C145. I wound up making new pivot brackets. Still doesn't hold the hood in the open position but fits the hood stand much better. Marvin
Electro12WH 50 #11 Posted July 31, 2013 I tried to put a B80 hood on a C160. Didn't work! I measured the length of the hood and the height of the grill and all was good. But, apparently the angle was different.
