Anyone bought a power washer lately?

Recommended Posts

Thought I'd ask the question here.

I'm thinking about buying a gas powered pressure washer, its main purpose will be to blast of old peeling paint from the wood siding on my house.

I'd like it to be as small and portable as possible, probably Honda (or Honda clone) powered, and probably a horizontal crankshaft on the motor (because vert's just seem wrong to me).

Anyone got any recommendations?

Mike, I've got a Karcher with a 5hp Honda engine, it's rated at 2300 psi if I remember right. I've had it several years and would buy another one. It always starts.

What's your budget?  I've had a Karcher for a while and it's 2300psi.  I've never used it to strip wood but I would imagine it could get rid of the loose paint.  At full pressure I need to hang on tight with both hands to control it.  Have you looked into possibly renting/buying a dustless blaster (or something similar)?  It's a water pressure washer with media in it.  It will strip most anything but if you're not careful it could gouge the wood.

Two years ago I bought the HF 2500 PSI Pressure Washer. It was used quite a bit that summer, and then stored by using pump lubricant, fogging the cylinder, and draining the gas. Last year it helped hold down the concrete in my garage ( just like my snow blower :).)

I brought it out yesterday to do some general cleaning around the house as well as my new tractor. Surprise, surprise! It started on the first pull! I didn't even have to swap out the Chinese plug that it came with. I'm at about 20 hours use now. It has gotten two oil changes in that time as well.  I'm happy with it.

Honda is my choice of power, and General Pump is my choice of pump. I have a 3500 psi washer with 13 HP Honda engine. It has variable pressure control and multible spray tips. It can not only take off the paint, but several layers of wood with it. So you must choose wisely when selecting tips and pressure.

Mine cost about $1300.00 ten years ago. Never had a bit of trouble until this year when the pressure unloader failed. Only cost me $60.00 to repair as opposed to some of the ones from the big box stores that don't have replaceable parts and need to replaced every couple of years.

You can usually find a bunch of used and/or broken pump washers on CL. Many of the cheap machines will have the pump break or the ownwers let water freeze in them. You can buy some decent pumps to attach to one of those engines and end up with a fairly good and inexpensive washer.

I found a real nice Honda 6hp engine for $30 and bought a good 2600psi pump for $170, better than new for much less.

sorekiwi, I used a pressure washer many years ago to get the old paint and crud off of a wood sided garage.

The wood was very "fuzzy" after the cleaning & drying. It was still fuzzy when I painted it. Looked like sideways stalagtites.

I have a Karcher with a Honda on it, Rated at 2625 PSI. One of best investments I have ever made. Actually I got it from a Place up in Michigan that specializes in power washers. They have them on ebay all the time, The one I picked out was a re manufactured one. It really was new. The salesman told me when I called them to ask about their washer was that alot of people buy them use them once then return them. They go through them top to bottom, I got mine shipped to me and had to call them about a small oil leak on the pump and before I knew it they had a new pump sitting on my front door step, They called me 3 time to check that everything was satisfactory and they were there if I need anything else. Great people. I have had it 5 years now and it runs like a new one. Take paint off and put holes in things if your not careful and use the right tip. There is no greasy dirty horses at my house. They all get baths on a regular basis. Great for cleaning both of mower decks to.

I found my Honda 2600 sitting behind a buddy's house fading away in the sun . very little maintenance and i had it up and running . it's been a great power washer . quick release handle turns around for easy storage. Just don't forget to winterize them . ya there is a ton of them on CL with cracked pumps .

That abrasive attachment sounds very handy.  Thanks  Here's the link if anyone needs it.
