Question

Hey all. I know this is my first post (hoping to be many), but I was hoping you could offer advice.

Looking at a 1982 (i think) c-105 with steel rear fenders. Appears to be in great shape. Comes with 32" deck and snow blower. Owner wants $775. Is that out of line?

That would have a 10HP Kohler with the 8 speed tranny--- a good efficient combo.  Pictures would help, but if it's in great shape, I'd offer 650.

For $775 that thing better be in brand new condition.  A decent running tractor of that age in great shape should be no more then $500 In my opinion  But I am a bottom feeder and have never paid more then $200 for a tractor, some of them actually have run.

 

The attachments do make it worth a little more but I would figure at max $400 for the tractor and $100 each for the deck and blower.  However location can make a huge difference, I know that in Michigan things seem to be a little cheaper then they are back East.

In my opinion, I think that the $775.00 price is a little high for a 30 year old tractor. If the guy is firm, and you really want it, take $775.00 with you, but show him $500.00 cash and see if money talks. Just my 2 cents worth.

I thank you all for your advice.  I am just hesitant to drop $775 on it, would be my first older tractor.  It looks great, it sounds great, it runs great.  But really, what else can I do with it besides mow with a small deck and snow blow?

 

And, will this thing really blow snow big time?  or is it more of a fun add on?

without the cab, I'd say $500-600.  there doesn't seem to be any pinpoint pricing on anything right now, though.   searching the adds, you will see basically the same tractor with wildly different prices.

are you sure that isn't a 36" deck?

if you can get it a price that you like,the c105 is a great machine.

Thanks Bean.  It looks to be a great tractor on all aspects, just too high priced from everything I am seeing.  And maybe it is a 36", I didn't measure, going on what the owner said.

I agree, without a cab, $550 tops, there are other machines to be had, you just have to be patient and look, I can say a 10 horse does push snow as we have used our 1054 but unfortunately we only have a single stage and with the heavier snow, it doesnot have the power, but flings the powdery stuff, but where are my manners...

    Just like in real estate, value is determaned by location to a large extent. If you find what you are looking for close to home it may be worth $200 more to you than one you have

to drive quite a way to see if it is really worth buying. If you have a show with a flea market that is

a great place to shop.

Everyone has their own threshold of pain on what a "good" price is. Why not try to assess the price based on value received. I bought a similar C-105 last spring - complete with 42 inch rear discharge deck and single stage snow blower (doesn't look like it was ever used)... oh, it also had wheel weights and chains and the original manual, etc. 

I paid $1000 for it -  more than what most people would consider a "good deal". 

But it was 2 miles from home, I had it when I needed it and didn't need to go on 20 more wild goose chases. I put it to work the day I bought it and haven't needed to do anything other than a blade sharpening and oil changes. OK - one wheel fell off (snap ring design is lousy) but I put in a new wheel bearing (under $4 at TSC) and used a split clamp collar I had laying around - it will never "walk off" again.

I could have gone to one of the big box stores and bought a modern equivalent Deere, or Troy Bilt, or some other MTD product for a few hundred more. It wouldn't have had the snow blower, weights or chains. Actually, my neighbor did buy a Deere at about the same time I bought my C-105. The dealer took it back for repair and adjustment twice in the first three weeks. In the fall he, as well as a few other neighbors had their "new" machines picked up and had a "fall service" performed. I threw in a bit of gas stabilizer and when I went out to the garage to start it for it's first mowing in May it started right up. It doesn't backfire, the floating deck leaves my lawn nice and level (a lot better than my neighbors), and if the need ever arises it has a real carburetor that can be adjusted and it can be made to run properly - no misses, no backfires, etc.

I think that for what I wanted to do I got a bargain - after the fact you can find a lot of machines that may appear to be a better "bargain" than the one you bought - most of them really aren't any better - it's just that "grass is greener" thing...

If you are willing to spend 775, I would purchase a larger tractor. Or find another tractor for about half that. If you look on cl you can find nice ones that aren't crazy pricy

Without the cab $600. Those snowblowers work rather well. You'll really be amazed. Go on you tube. But a 10hp will run a 42" mower deck, tiller, snow blower, and snow plow with out any problems. It will also pull a full size pickup uphill.

It is just like hhbrooks49 says. If it is close to home, it might be worth more. Of course, it is a lot of fun but time consuming to search. I have learned to use my wife's car for looking at tractors with a down payment in my pocket. It gets three times the mileage than the pickup at 10-12mpg.

 

I have a C-105 as well and really enjoy it!

For $775 'd need at least 14 hp, preferably 16 hp. More horsepower give you the option to blow snow better,

use a bigger deck.
