244H,TRANS PROBLEM, need some ideas!

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys, I have this 92(?) 244H I have been using since May of last year and it just seems like

it gets slower all the time.

I would think if the Drive Belt were slipping I would hear it or see signs of it coming apart.

Last year when I started using it the Trans oil was green in color, now it is dark.

I wanted to change it but I can't find 20w which the manual specifies, and then there's the therory

about not changing Trans oil unless you have to.

Should I change the Trans oil?,if so..what should I use?

Could the Trans be slipping internaly?

Can anyone shed some light on this?

thanks in advance!

GREEN?  What's it smell like?

Manual calls for 20W ?  as in 20W SAE straight weight motor oil?  (sorry, not familiar with your machine).

I don't think I would buy any cockamamie theory of 'not changing Trans oil unless you have to.'  What does that really mean anyway?  If the manual for the machine specifies a service interval for the trans oil, then you 'have to'.

According to the official Toro/Wheel Horse 1956-1999 Lubrication Recommendations, Drive Belt & Mower Blade Usage Charts, the proper fluid for your 244H is 1 quart of SAE 30 API Service SG, SH, SJ or higher oil.

Drain it and replace it. What harm is it going to do? I don't think it will make it any worse. :)

Just found a manual for the Eaton 7 series trans... and surprise to me it says:

Oil changes - not required

Which in my opinion is crazy... but they're the manufacturer, who am I to second guess them?

Anyway, if you had GREEN fluid in your trans last year, it sounds to me as if someone put in the wrong fluid.  SAE 20W premium motor oil should never be GREEN!   I sure hope it wasn't anti-freeze! :ychain::laughing-rofl:

Eaton 7's are light duty and the pump is known to fail. For the price of a quart of oil, (actually less than a quart since you won't get it all out), you have absolutely nothing to lose but time if you get the same result afterward. We aren't that familiar with the 200 series tractors although there are members that have them and may chime in. Possibly asking for advice on the main forum page will get a better hit from 200 series owners. Your oil may have over-heated either because of a fan/cooling issue or a pump issue continually doing blow-by.

Good Luck!

Hello all. I am looking for suggestions on adapting the pto from my C series tractor to a harbor freight predator 420 13hp engine. I know the predator motors are a controversial topic however it is the route I have chosen for this particular machine. The intent was to mostly use it for plowing so no PTO required but it would be handy to have. Looking to hear from someone that has successfully done the swap that may offer any advice before I attempt to transfer it over. Just looking for any general pointers that will help me along the way to make it go as smoothly as possible.

I am new to this group. I have my sons collection of Wheel Horse tractors that are definitely rare models. He still has one to pick up that’s dual wheel and was purchased from Peabody Coal Co. This is the perfect site to get involved with. The best advice comes from folks that are hands on.. had to be their own machine shop. Nothing compares to the knowledge in this group.! But my first topic is this 19hp Craftsman INDY 500 limited edition model. I was reading a topic on here about the 18hp and 20hp models, but cannot find a single replica of this tractor on ANY site or e-bay. We live near central Ohio, so I’m assuming it’s a regional release. The Briggs engine lobes like a medium cam in a V8. We thought it was an intermittent miss, but it’s not missing a bit. The engine is the strongest riding tractor I’ve ever operated. It will literally cook the deck belt in high grass before dragging the engine down. Very wide and lower to the ground. I never got the size, but the rearend is all tires.! Looks like a dragster from behind.. almost  gives the appearance of shortened axle tubes in a hot rod. Just wondering if anybodys ever seen this particular model. My next top is will be about the C160 total hydraulic Wheel Horse he just acquired. Claim they were specially made for snow removal.

New to the forum, but not to Wheel Horse. I just bought a 314-8 on the gear shift pattern there is what Toro calls a spring shift control, my 312-8 doesn't have this The 314 is a 1999, what was the purpose for this. Thanks.
