Wheel Horse c-101 charging problems

This is my first wheel horse.  I am having a charging problems and I am not sure if it is the coil, battery, or rectifier.  Are there any common issues or does anybody have any suggestions on ways to figure out which one it is?  I don't have a tester to test any of these.  I took off the rectifier and looked at the back. The resin that covers the circuit board is yellow.  Like a wood glue yellow, not brown or black.  It doesn't look burnt.  Can anyone help?

First things first, check all your grounds. Even make sure your rectifier has good, rust free contact with the dash tower.

First of all, the coil has nothing to do with charging of the battery. The charging system is comprised of a stator (alternator) under the flywheel, the regulator/rectifier, and the battery. The circuit goes from the R/R through the ignition switch and ammeter, to the battery. Any place where the wires connect can be a problem.

If you don't have a wiring diagram, you can get one from the manuals section of the forum, see below. The wiring diagram that I have added shows the charging circuit highlighted in red.

As was stated above, check all grounds, especially the ones from the engine to the frame. Check all wires where they connect to an item such as the R/R, the ignition switch, the ammeter, and solenoid, and the battery. All contacts must be clean and free of corrosion.

The yellow stuff on the underside of the regulator is normal. Clean the three electrical contacts on the R/R and make sure that it is making good electrical (ground) contact to the frame when you reinstall it. When the engine is running, you should be getting about 14.5 volts DC from the (+) contact spade of the R/R.

 How specifically are you checking the " grounds " , I have a good multimeter but I'm not sure I'm doing this right - I'm all back together on  my ( C-101 )  tractor and also having charging issues  .

Never mind - found it -  wire in the plastic 3 wire plug was pushing down and not on .

 

16 volt charge

16 Volt charge is too high...

 

Yer gonna 'cook' that battery if it's not already.

Too high voltage can result from a poorly grounded regulator/rectifier.

Went over some things today  - I'm showing  14-14.5 volt  charge at the battery .

I'm guessing  ground, after reading you and maynards post,   went over every last connection with a wire brush and exposed some  bare metal at the grounding points -checked the continuity on the rectifier , fired it up and got those readings .

 

 

Thanks for the heads up guys -   - when I got that 16 volt charge  after it wasn't charging ( loose wire ) yesterday thought I was good to go.
