518H manual deck lift???

Recommended Posts

Got a dumb question: I picked up a 518H and the 48" mower deck has had very little use and was unattached. I had to sqrounge around to piece together the mechanical lift pieces as most of the parts were lost or busted from a snow plow. I got it together and when I lift the deck it raises more on the right than the left by a lot. Its like the left side is waaaay heavier. The right rear deck wheel is off the ground by 3 inches and the left is still on the concrete. Am I missing something here or is this normal? It all looks correct, I would like to see it come up farther than it does but it does work, just "cattywhompus" hanging from the lift while up..I appreciate any suggestions, it mows really nice. Thanks for any suggestions, Walt

Sounds like you have a interference. Any metal touching metal when you have it up? Does the deck level out if you lower it slowly?

If I hold it up unlatched off the lift arm I can rock the deck up and down from the left side. It doesnt seem to be binding, just way heavier on the left side. When I lift it slowly the right comes up probably 2-3 inches before the left does. I have the running boards off and the manual says to raise it till the runner's touch the deck. That probably would force it to hang straight but it still lifts kinda goofy...Thanks Walt

Interesting. I'm going to go look at my 516 and see if the runners true up the deck.

No, the deck comes up evenly and doesn't touch the runners.

I guess as long as it cuts well, you are in high cotton. Sorry I couldn't help.

Something is not right. Is your lift bar possibly broke...Not your manual lift handle, but underneath the tractor. If someone abused it bad enough with the snowblower, one side could be cracked/broke, but still holding on enough to partially lift at angle? Good luck.

Me thinks you don't have the deck connected properly.  Here is what the 48" deck lift hdwe looks like.  On the front of this hardware is a round bar with a yoke in it.  That yoke MUST be positioned UP and slightly tilted FORWARD in order for it to engage a small GUIDE BAR that is on the mid Tach-o-Matic bracket tractor...between the side plates.   This yoke is to position the deck so that it lifts evenly and to preclude back and forth movement of the deck.

Page from deck manual. Look at figure 6...that is the yoke I refer to.

Here's what I have: " Brand new parts"   new lift bar and bushing for the left pivit point, new lift chain attachment eye bolt and trunion. The front fork is strattling the bar. I think its attached correctly. The lift assembly attached to the deck is loose and appears to be the way it works. I may try to video the operation of the lift to show whats going on. Its like the lift only picks up the right side. With it up maybe 5lbs of lift on the left side will rock the deck level. I really like this machine, I got a lot of work in it and it runs like new. I hope I can get this right..I really appreciate the help  and suggestions, Walt
