Change the transmission pulley to a smaller size.

Welcome to RedSquare! Putting a smaller drive pulley on your transmission and a bigger pulley on your engine should give you some extra speed.. Gotta remember though, regular wheel horse garden tractors were not designed to go really fast, so you got to be careful when you make them go faster.

Yes it can get a little scary on one but I do have an old Craftsman that will run about 27mph. Haven't tried that with a Wheel Horse though but it would be better as the front steering is much better on a Horse. I have often thought about doing it but I would hate to have one of my Horses suffer from an accident. :eusa-think::ychain:

:WRS:  The larger engine pulley will make the :wh:  go faster but remember the brakes on the :wh:  are on the transmission, not the wheels. Sooner or later you will have to stop. Since the differential will put the braking power on the wheel with the least traction you could find yourself skidding out of control if you go too far with speeding up your poney. If you feel the need for speed please take vidios and post them here! :laughing-rolling:  :ROTF:

Here is a guy who put a turbo on his wheel horse. It did 30 foot wheelies.

953 brings up a good point about the brakes. Soak the brake band to get ALL of the grease and oil out of it, clean it with a wire brush and clean the drum too. My old rat rod would do over 30 mph and almost stop on a dime. The rear wheels would spin in different directions when locking the brakes but it didn't get out of control. It was out of control when you stomped the gas pedal.

I found the biggest danger was tipping over and mine was lowered, so flying around on regular tractor with a higher center of gravity will be even more dangerous. BE CAREFUL! You don't want to be the first guy on your block to end up in the hospital from riding a lawnmower!

i dont think you will find an easier way to speed up the model of tractor you have than to do the hydro drive pulley and belt mod. it wont give you a 30 mph tractor or anything even close to that, but the difference is very noticeable and you can still get the tractor off the line smoothly without excessive belt slip. stepping off the clutch will pull the front wheels easily, but for me the most important thing was to not loose some of the lower gearing for working the tractor. i can still creep in the lower gears, but it is definitely harder to get it going slowly in top gear compared to stock.

plus the bonus for me was standard parts. the hydro pulley is readily available off any of the big block single kohler hydro tractors or your 520s. the belt is your standard hydro belt from the same years, and you can fit it all under your belt guard you have on the tractor now, (im assuming they used the same belt guard- like the blackhoods)......

all the part numbers should be in the thread i posted the link on further up in this topic......

The 5-1/4 pulley makes 3rd gear awsome, and makes 2nd gear just right for mowing.  Then there is low range that is acutally useable for dirt work.  WH should have used a 5-1/4 on their 8 speeds as well.  Very worthwile in my opinion.

When you make this change to an 8 speed, what else needs to change?  Belt, belt guard - anyone worked out these details?

Thanks!

Bill

I am interested in this as well. It looks like the prior information on this was lost at some point.

Agree, I notice for longer trips up the drive with the rubbish bins, or carting dirt to the dump site a slightly higher speed would be nice. Just a couple of mph, nothing crazy.
