What transmission should I use on a pulling tractor with a Polaris 1000 engine on it?

If you are going to use a wheel horse transmission...the strongest is the 8 speed, 8 pinion with 1 1/8" axles. :)   I think # 5091.

BTW...Welcome to Red Square    You may want to check out our "Puller" section on the main page.

That's just the stock 8 speed right?

Well yes and no. There are two very different 8 speed trannies plus a couple older posi-rears sprinkled here and about. The very best rears are the 8 pinion/inch and an eighth rears. Look for the inch and an eighth axle diameter as opposed to an inch diameter axle.

Ok, if I can find one, should I rebuild it?

Rebuilding is going to depend on what shape it's in when you get it. Where are you in NY ? Are you going for a modified or a repowered tractor look ?

For what you are building, I would at least open it up and take a look.  Not hard to do and plenty of help here on the site.  You may want to consider sending a PM to Mike Biser (racinfool40)...he may have the transmission you are looking for, and it may already have been rebuilt/checked out. :)  He picks them up, fixes them and sells parts.

We don't go into them until they break.

But most of us have 2 or 3 spare trans so we can swap out when needed. I have two under the bench ready to go for backups and some still in tractors just in case. We have snapped a couple axles and hubs too.

Wow bearpath I think you found the stress riser in that input shaft....

If you keep breaking keyways out like that you may want to consider using a trantourque or similar keyless hub. Or at least a taper lock hub.

Anyone have a pic of these keyless hubs installed?  Seems like an alternative to repair a bad axle without getting into the transaxle, Im thinking it would be much easier to bore the hub if one of these devices would work?

That was the axle split the hub also. Still not sure why it did that.
