9-5 refurb. (pic heavy)

Recommended Posts

Ken B

I started this clean up and repaint at 9 this morning and wrapped things up at 5 pm. I removed and stripped all tins to bare metal, primed and then painted them. I originally bought the decal kit for my 520 but I came to the decision that the 520 was too clean to repaint. I cut out the 520-H on the decals and put em on. i could care less that it doesn't say 417-8 on the hood, I know what it is. All I have to do is install some new running board mats and put on the new rear lights. I'm pretty happy with how it came out.

I give it hell with one of them knarly wire wheels on my angle grinder to take it to bare metal. I then use a D/A with 220 grit, I then wipe it all down with wax and grease remover. Be real carefu; if you use the knarly wire wheel method, they can do some real damage to you if you aren't careful.

I started refurbing Martin today. I'm buzzing along merrily with my DA on the fender pan. It's till a chore even with the thin 80's and up WH paint burning thru disc after disc I get out my cordless angle grinder with a knotted wheeI to do the inside corners.I hit the pan and Vroom the paint is gone! Hood here I come! If you do this get a good quality wheel or most of the wires will end up in your stomach!

Thanks for all the compliments guys. I wish I had a picture of the first refurb that I did well over 32 yrs. ago. The HORROR! (I was about 13 at the time)  The tractor was a Monte Carlo lawn tractor( anyone remember them?) Well, it was ugly to begin with, and all I accomplished was making it uglier. White latex with a brush. I was so ashamed of it that I ghost rode it down a mountain and into the river never to be seen again. Wonder if its still there?

When I do a full restoration it takes me over a yr. I haven't done a full resto for a few yrs. now as I really don't have the space to dedicate to a full resto. (my garage is stuffed) Other than painting the tins(did them in my tent with some lights) I did this refurb in my rock driveway, (I'm still sore as hell) IMO for a quick refurb to be a success it can't look like you did it fast, everything needs to be clean, no sanding marks, no painting over rust or grease, and no runs! I didn't stop for anything on this one, no phone calls, no drink or food breaks and no eye contact with neighbors walking or driving by! I was a little under the gun on this one, I was doing my refurb in the old ladies parking spot and she gets home at 5:30! If she could have seen the mess that was there just a half hr. earlier....Clueless.
