sned 15 #1 Posted June 23, 2013 Is there a particular muffler that will give me the quietest sound? My WH is 10x louder than my case and they have the same kohler 14. Starting to make me not want to start it. It is a GT14.
papaglide 542 #2 Posted June 23, 2013 I am going to follow this as well. My GT14 is loud as well.
bean 85 #3 Posted June 23, 2013 I'd be interested to know also. my 310-8 is loud, even with the canister-type muffler. I thought that it was just the nature of the beast, until I saw a jd 208(8hp kohler) at a garage sale. the owner started it for me, and I was shocked at how quiet it was. my 1973 8hp was several times louder than the jd, and my 10hp kohler is even louder

sned 15 #5 Posted June 23, 2013 Thanks welderman that is something I have been contemplating. I just wish there was something reasonable in size that would quiet it down. It never use to bother me but now that I have daughter who wakes up for everything. I cringe every time I start it.
sned 15 #6 Posted June 24, 2013 Now that the show is over and everyone is settling in. Any other input concerning this topic?
thehorse 221 #7 Posted June 26, 2013 I used the gravely replacement from napa. Not bad at all. $42. Put it on 416-8 kohler.

sned 15 #13 Posted June 26, 2013 Awesome! Much smaller than I expected. I see you pointed it down. Any reason?
bean 85 #14 Posted June 26, 2013 you wouldn't happen to have a video of it running, would you?
tomtractor 71 #15 Posted June 26, 2013 How much quieter is the new muffler than the old one? Did the old muffler have cracks where the exhaust was leaking?
thehorse 221 #16 Posted June 26, 2013 The old muffler was shot. I pointed it down to keep heat away from hood. When you install you will have to find the right spot for you. I did not want it blowing Dow on the belt. I had a video but no longer. Not bad noise though. Pros and cons. Not as quiet as factory but 1/4 the price. Also spent a while filing elbow coming off the head so it would fit.
wallfish 17,105 #17 Posted June 26, 2013 I made one out of an old propane bottle and pipes from an old rotted muffler. Used the old pipes because I was too lazy to drill all the holes. Drilled the 2 holes in the propane bottle for the pipes. Then lined the inside of the bottle with fireproof fiber mat and used 1/2 hole wire fence to hold it in position. Welded pipes into the 2 holes and was ready to go. I was very surprised how quiet it is. Drove it around at the show so maybe anyone who saw me driving an old 655 with a K181 in it can comment on how quiet it was. KenB and Stevebo heard it run. I can almost listen to a radio while mowing.
JackC 617 #18 Posted June 26, 2013 Has anyone looked into the quiet muffler offerings at Jack's? http://www.jackssmallengines.com/noisy.cfm
rick 237 #19 Posted June 29, 2013 Have been interested in those mufflers from Jack's, too. Though not for a Wheel Horse. For a Troy Bilt Horse! If it works for the tiller, I will look into doing one for my C100, which still has the Nelson muffler on it. It is a little loud for me any more...
Austin860 82 #20 Posted June 29, 2013 I just put a strait pipe on my c100 because it was I quiet, mission accomplished 🙠

sorekiwi 761 #22 Posted June 30, 2013 I have the Gravely muffler on my Lawn Ranger (K181 Kohler) and my 1267 (12 hp Kohler). I love it on the Ranger, much quieter than the pepperpot that I had on there previously. Its too loud on the 1267, I'll be finding something different for that. Don1977 604 #23 Posted June 30, 2013 I don't have a muffler on my 18 HP briggs Vanguard. The pipes have nothing in them. I welded a large washer with a one inch hole to the outlet tapped two 1/4" holes in it added two smaller washers with 3/4" holes with drilled out 1/4" nuts between them. It didn't quite it down that much but it took the high pitched sound out that was annoing. Might help on the on the Gravely muffler not much you could do to help a pepper box.
