Different Gear Ratios?

Recommended Posts

I thought the 8-speed transmissions were essentially the same, but have run into an issue that has me curious. My Father-in-law is into garden tractor pulling.  He has a C-175 that has a Honda 20hp, 2 cyl engine.  It is really fast in 3rd high.  He has built another one that started life as a C-105 and now has a Kohler 25hp, 2 cyl engine.  They both have the same size pulleys on the engine and transmission, but the C-105/Kohler is not nearly as fast. Any ideas what is going on?

Thanks, Fred P

The :wh:  C 105 and C 175 both came with the Wheel Horse model 103916   8 Speed trans, my guess would be that the two cycle engine turns a lot more RPMs than the Kohler. Need to find someone with a tac to check it out.

He said 2 cylinder, not 2 cycle. Some other factor at play here. Governor issues?

A modern Japanese engine may well comfortably rev higher than a kohler. My Honda quad engine revs to 7000...

Also depands on how far into the pulley the belt fits. Aftermarket pullies are like tires size depends on what they make them not what there listed to be. I bought a B pulley for mine and the B belt hardly fit in the groove 3/4 of the way.
