Two old Dodge Power Wagons at the local scrap yard.....

Recommended Posts

4xfourfun

It seems like I'm always coming across things when I don't need them.

A buddy of mine called me up and said a couple old Dodge's showed up at a local scrap yard. First is a is a 1961 W300 Power Wagon 4x4 with a 10k winch on the front and second is a 1972 W600 Power Wagon 4x4 with a 20k winch in the bed. Both were owned by the same guy. He also brought in a 1977 Dodge M887 Military Ambulance but it was pretty rough.

Needless to say, both of these were saved from the crusher that day :)

They were there for a reason.............

You got some inside info? Everything goes to the scrap yard for a reason. My guess is he had too many vehicles in his yard and the town made him do it.

I had a 73 3/4 ton PW 4x4. What a money pit. Fix this then fix that. When I thought I had it licked I decided to replace the Rad. Because a bunch of fins were missing. Drove it to work and the plow pulley flew off and thru the new rad. Put the old one back in with a For Sale sign on it. Started it one day and the 318 started to rattle. I had good oil pressure or so I thought. When working on it I turned the key on for a min. I had 60 lbs without it running!! Took the oil pump apart and it broke the pump shaft as a piece of valve seal got into the gears and locked it up. Just about gave it away to get rid of it.

Hi, Does he plan to keep these trucks whole or part them out? If the W600 has a power take off on the transfer case I would be interested in it. Is it a 5 speed transmission? If so, I might be interested in that as well. If the 61 has a poly 318 with a 4 barrel manifold, I would be interested in the manifold too. There are other misc parts I would be interested in as well I am sure.

Thanks

As the story goes, the guy has LOTS of cool old trucks and he had to clean up the property(suburb of St Louis MO). These 2 Power Wagons were part of a drilling business he bought and hadn't used in years. He had no time or plans to mess with them so made one call and had them hauled off for $200 per ton. If the salvage yard wouldn't have bent the driveshafts moving them around with the forklift I would bet they could have been driven around the yard after a little work. They're 40-50 year old trucks, so I wouldn't expected them to be daily drivers without some work especially since their previous care and maintenance is unknown and matters greatly. But they are no different then any Wheel Horse, a labor of love. I have a '74 W300 Power Wagon, its one of the best old trucks I've had. It has Dana 70 axles front a rear and a dump bed, great little work truck but I've taken care of it and know a lot of its previous history. 47 JDG, I'll let you know if any plans to part them is made but at this time they will probably stay complete. I do know of several 2wd Sweptline parts trucks if theres anything else you may need just let me know. I know the W600 has a PTO off the case but not sure if its a 4spd or 5spd. I did see it has Rockwells with 6.80 gears! The '61 Poly 318 is a 2bbl for sure though. Fired them both up on auxillary gas cans and they run great.

It's unbelievable what people take there. Another guy drove a 1990 Dodge D250 onto the scale, pulled his license plates off and walked away from it. He said the front-end was getting loose and wearing tires. And the craziest part about that is, it had a Cummins 6BT diesel in it that ran awesome. It was gobbled up rather quickly for the motor. The garden tractors are thrown onto the scrap pile quickly, so it's hard to catch them in time. I've tried talking them into putting them to the side but no progress there yet.

NICE!! Hope they are being saved at the very least being parted out!

There's people who would kill for those HD fenders that both have and the running boards on the one truck. If they have round instrument gauges that's a rare option too....

I'm looking for a WM300 (the original Power Wagon) for a diesel swap. The more patina the better!

Hey Charlie,

Fabbing up driveshafts to throw under them and see what happens, but fairly positive they will stay complete. Around here the old Power Wagons are getting so hard to find we just had to save them. The '61 W300 has the round gauges which are pretty neat, and they all seem to work too! Cab is rough but have a much better one to swap just in case. I was really wanting a '61-'71 Sweptline 4dr 4x4 to do a Cummins swap, but the old 4-doors are getting hard to find. I have a spare front Dana 60 I'm holding on to in case I find a 2wd though. I too have always wanted a WM300, they sure do bring a premium but are really sweet. And by seeing your build thread I could only imagine what you could do with it!

Just as I suspected, he had to get rid of them. I'm in love with that 72 at the moment.... It sure as hell would make a nice old school wood hauler. One of these days I'll have myself a Power Wagon....

You were right on Ken, and they said he will be getting rid of a few more shortly so I'm very interested to see whats next. I'm sure one will come your way, probably when you're least expecting it too!

I have a 1952 M37 (military power wagon) that I use frequently and mainly as a firewood hauler and log skidder with the winch. My dad has a 1951 B3 flat fender Power Wagon that is currently a project, which is basically the exact same truck as a WM300 just an earlier model. We also have a 1960 W500 dump truck.

Those are some neat trucks 47 JDG.

I've always wanted a M37, figured it would go great with my Kaiser Jeep M715.

Thanks. I like the M715 too. Do you have a picture of yours? I would like to see it. Does yours still have the Tornado engine?

Yes, it still has the original Tornado 230 OHC engine and runs great. Around 30,xxx miles on her. Its pretty well original, someone put bucket seats in it at one time but I'm going to get originals back in it when I come across some.

Looked through my picture files and I don't have any of mine, but I'll get some. I have pics of a parts one I went to Tulsa OK to get, it had a winch on it I wanted. So I'm rebuilding the winch to put on mine.

Here's the parts/winch donor before I sold it years ago:

Great Saves! We have had 3 Power Wagons in the past and loved them all. A '76 M880, A '76 W200 extended cab with 440 big block, and a '78 W150. Power Wagons are the best classic trucks ever as far as I am concerned!!! :)

Wow, I love that W500 and the B3 power wagon. I would absolutely love to find an original weathered power wagon like that!
