Steering Reduction ?

Recommended Posts

MalMac

If a guy/gal was to convert a 90 520H to a steering reduction setup is it mainly a drop in and go? I know about drilling the 2 extra holes in the frame. I was concerned about the angle of the upper steering shaft through the upper dash steering support is it the same as the 91's and later that have the reduction. Since this tractor is a dedicated to a 2 stage the reduction would be nice.

MalMac I owned a 90 520 and sold it.  I converted my 314 to  520 steering.  Other than shortening the steering shaft everything was a direct bolt in so I have to think the '90 520 would be a direct bolt in.  You could always look at the part schematics on the Toro web-site and compare the 90 model to the 91.

The other choice would be to put a ribbed tire on like the vredestein and inflate to 25 psi.  I did that for the first winter with the 314 and was surprised how much a difference that made just by itself.

I'm running Firestone tri ribs from Miller Tire. Huge difference in steering. It's much easier now.

Thanks guys for the replies. After studying it for a while and checking parts diagrams. Looks to be just a drop in and go with the exceptions of drilling the frame. Hydro I will probably do the opposite of you. I have a Mag 14 waiting to drop in it when the Onan goes. Should make a good tractor.

...yes I'm sure it would.  My guess is you will have to change the belt guard given the height of the PTO.  With a back up engine on hand, the Onan will probably last longer. :)

I believe your right, belt guard and maybe some PTO stuff. Only gages that will work would be the hour meter and amp. Hopefully that's way down the road. Just have to decide what hood decals to put on it. 314HX (X standing for modified experimental) or 514H. Decisions Decisions. :eusa-think:
