Been a while since the last update...A kind of naked front end picture whilst the engine was being rebuilt.

A long overdue update... bendy now has decals!








I finally made an exhaust , it was annoying the neighbours

Cue a piece of child's swing, a table leg and lots of holes



Filled with fibreglass and welded up



and a nice stainless heat guard



And finally.... Bendy now has a remote locking diff



Used a bike brake cable in order to span the articulation joints and make life a bit easier.



Spring loaded selector keeps it in or out of lock

My son has been helping me this week whilst I've been at work

The exhaust heat shield is now done



The front hitch is well underway



And the rear 3 point is painted and has check chains

this thread has been sparse on updates - having moved house and starting other projects...

 

It's time bendy had it's hydraulics finished, there's also a heap of other jobs to complete, including stopping the rear drive slipping when under water, rebuilding the magnum engine, adding a diff lock indicator, etc

 

For now, here is the D-series spool valve mounted with easy reach levers and linkages and decal to finish it off. I'm just starting on adding a power steering pump to the axle, driven from the clutch.

wow didn't realise you were doing a front 3pt hitch! what will you use that for? dozer blade? power steering pump sounds like a great idea a few people have done that on youtube.

I have just sat here and read this entire thread. I have been a machinist for 17 years and have been lucky to work on some pretty cool stuff, it takes a lot to impress me engineering wise, and im certainly inpressed, my wife is not however as I kept shoving my phone in here face saying "wow check out what he did here" lol. I love how you used the u joint  to crate a knuckle. One question have you hung anything on your three point, and how did the steeing pump handle the weight?

Thanks, I realised I haven't done an update for a while.

 

the three point will lift 200lbs, or easily push down to lift the rear end...

Been a while since the last update,  I was determined to lose the belts at the rear and use chains. Here's a few pics along the way, I've tried 3 or 4 different ideas, the final one  caused a bit of damage and forced me to abandon it. Despite adding large flanges to the sprockets, and tensioners, it all went wrong and jamm d up pretty bad!

Figuring out the cog belt length is the biggest challenge but there are charts out there to match tooth pitch vs pulley diameter vs centerline....can't find it right now .

Did you consider using the drive system from a Harley Davidson? They are built for all weather conditions and lots of power.

Exactly what I linked - many equipment manufacturers use that exact type of belt drive for high torque loads . If you want cheap access to those type of parts - go hunting in an auto wrecking yard and start pulling timing covers - many Japanese engines use that same belt design and many small idler pulleys and such - some even have stamped sheet metal flanges to help guide the belt and prevent contaminants from getting in the drive . Those belts can transfer more torque than most chains , won't stretch due to the Kevlar/Aramid fibers and can actually outlast a chain by quite a lot . I've watched a brother in law dump the clutch on a fully dressed Harley and snap that rear tire loose like nothing - which is a sight to behold...lol .

The problem with those cogged belts is exactly the same problem as steel roller chain-they won't twist. They will transmit a lot of torque, but the pulleys have to be held in exact rigid alignment. The problem Mark is dealing with is that the rear axle assembly on Bendy is the articulating section and the drive has to be able to run under load, but out of alignment. I'm not sure what to suggest, but I don't think a timing belt from an engine would stay on the pulleys at all.

well I went back to belts and Bendy has continued working well (as long as the belts aren't wet)

 

I've continued pulling old fence out that has been buried in the ground, and isn't good for mowing or kids.

 

 

it's pulling great

 

I lifted the front on sunday to have a look underneath and check all was ok...

 

 

and noticed this

 

 

one of my bearing carriers for the centre cardon joint had left the bearing out. I must've not noticed i needed a collar to hold the bearing in. Luckily there doesn't seem to be any damage done, so I've added a collar and reassembled.

Another long overdue update, it was always intended that a front three point hitch would be added...

 

So a bracket was made to fit under the engine between the chassis section.

 

 

and a cylinder that fits like so

 

 

the cylinder is too long so had to be chopped down to shorten the throw

 

 

 

It's tight in there, new 1/4 hoses are on order with 1/2" JIC connectors, might get to try it at the weekend.

 

 

 

and yes I lose even more approach angle   which bendy does suffer with, but I will be able to hand things off the front
