Vinylguy 4,684 #1 Posted May 13, 2013 I put a pair of cheap plastic deck wheels on my Ranger and it was cutting great till I was backing up and noticed the right side wheel was bent badly. It appears that any time I turn in reverse with the deck down it puts a strain on the deck wheels. the right side was bent a little when I got it so we hammered out the wheel bracket and it seemed fine till I replaced the wheels. Maybe the metal is too stressed from straightening and I need to find a replacement bracket for it. Anyone else have this problem?
Don1977 604 #2 Posted May 13, 2013 You may need to do some deck reinforcing. My deck is a 48" but I kept bending it by hitting above the ground tree roots. I took a 3/8" steel rod and welded around the front to reinforce it. I also tack welded a 1" x 1/8" steel strip down the closed side. If you look close you can see where I welded the rod on. The rollers are Dogwood I soaked then in oil and added brass bushings. Used to brake one or two of the cheap plastic ones every year those have been on 8 to 10 years. GlenPettit 1,717 #3 Posted May 13, 2013 There is a lot of stress on the deck wheels, they have to be special heavy-duty wheels, much much stronger than regular lawn mower wheels, and greaseable with a zerk fitting. Several people on eBay have these special wheels for sale.
doc724 925 #4 Posted May 13, 2013 I bought Stens aftermarket wheels from SJM Lawnmower in FL (via internet). Identical to Toro and about $13 each. SJM is cheaper than buying from Stens direct and much cheaper than ebay

Usmc1968 30 #6 Posted November 8, 2013 I just finished mowing for the season and noticed my front right platic wheel was gone The other side is good to go, but is looks like just some cheap plastic wheel. No grease fittings or anything, it just slides right into the axle. Will any mower wheels do? I have the 60" deck Semper Fi

Axles are available with grease fittings. You will need to drill out the mounting holes to 1/2" for these axles.
glgrumpy 35 #8 Posted November 9, 2013 Not sure if room enough, but what about new style "Rounded" wheels used now days? They would probly hold up to more sideways forces and glide over bumps and such, not grab. You would have to do your own research to find diameter and hole size to work on your decks. Metal centers and bearings are pretty much thing of past on such items.
tarcoleo 119 #9 Posted November 9, 2013 I have to agree with grumpy, new style round wheels are way better than the old style square ones. Same goes for the holes in the middle.
cheesegrader 433 #10 Posted November 9, 2013 I put on #300 solid plastic caster wheels from TSC a few years ago. They have a zerk, although one of mine wasn't drilled in properly, and had to be redone with a larger fitting. THey take a huge beating on a 60" deck, and still look new. Axles are available with grease fittings. You will need to drill out the mounting holes to 1/2" for these axles. we use these wheels on our booth modules at work. 4 of them support a large filter module that weighs, I'm guessing here, at least 500 lbs. at any one time there could be an additional 200-300 lbs of paint in them. when the guys change out colors in the booths they treat these modules like crap (like everything in the place) and the wheels hold up pretty good to the abuse. they also have a decent roller bearing in them with rollers that span the width of the wheel sleeve in the middle, plus they are greasable...... not sure where we purchase them from, probably granger, but i would think that if the ebay ones are the same quality as these are, then they would perform admirably on a mower deck.......
