5010 Transmission Question

Recommended Posts

This may be a stupid question, but......

Is it ok to open a Suburban 550 transmission (5010) with the input shaft side up?

I want to change the bushing on that side and don't want to take the whole thing

apart unless necessary.  Will I be able to close it back up if I do?

                                 Thanks, Larry

Larry, not a stupid question.  You will have no problem taking that side off and changing out the bushing. You may have to play around a little to match up the shafts into the bearing holes when you put it back together.  Patience and a little ingenuity should get it done.  The worst that can happen is you have to take it apart and put it back together in the traditional way.  Once you get it opened, you may want to take it apart anyway to clean it out...you have gone that far.already. :)

I suggest draining the trans oil, put in about 2 qts of diesel and run it on blocks for about 20 minutes in gear, then drain that and go for it.  The flushing will make the job a lot cleaner and easier to see what you have when you open it up.  Let us know how it goes. :)

Thanks for the reply, It is really quite clean inside.  There was little

to no oil inside and about 1 quart of nice clear water. No rust.

I hope it was just from improper storage and not used that way.

Like you said, I will give it a try and if it doesn't work I will assemble

it as outlined in your video.
