Working on my SK-486

Hey guys,

I bought this mower off my father in-law at the end of last year. I put a new battery and spark plug in it and it started right up. It actually ran a lot better than i thought it was going to. Mowed they yard once before grass stopped growing. This year i pulled it out and actually started to check it out. The air filter was packed with dust and pollen so i replaced that... Mowed the yard, but noticed that it wasn't cutting at all on the left side. Missing a blade. not broken or anything just gone.

I was looking at maybe selling this and getting a mulching mower but after looking around it seems this is a good machine and worth hanging on to.  Can you wheel Horse guys help me out here? Suggestions on what i should do / replace to keep this puppy running well? Like i said earlier, i actually think its running good now. No smoke power seems fine. Maybe it could be better?

Oh.. almost forgot. The reason i found your site!

Looking around for a replacement blade has been a major pain. Conflicting information and all that. I've not pulled one of the other blades off yet. I plan to tomorrow. Anyone know off hand or where to find the part number? I have pic of the deck plate. 42MS02 is the model number.

Here are some pix of what im working with :) I know.. it needs to be cleaned!!

AWESOME!! Thank you Gwest :)  Soooo much good info!

Im glad i decided to keep this machine. Getting a new mower might be nice.. but i think the Wheel Horse all fixed up would be much more cool :D

Maybe I'll post up more pics when i clean it up. I might even re-paint it and get a new decal kit.

I was talking with a friend of mine last night and we both might try to use the Gator blades and close of the chutes to convert to mulching.

Jay,

I have one (no it is not for sale). The previous owner left it outside all it's life and it is quite rusted. I would like to restore it but that may be a long time coming with all the others. Maybe I should go to the show and find a hood, fender and other parts in better condition to work with. I would like to see it look like naw again.

I'm thinking about selling this ole girl :(

I really only use it for mowing my lawn. lately i've been really wanting to get a mower that can bag. Tired of spitting grass everywhere. This machine has been great to me really.. Starts right up runs strong. No smoke or smell of any kind either.

What should i put it up for? (IF i decide to do it)

They are an awesome machine. I mowed with my SK-486 this past weekend and just love it. The 16 horse Kohler single has awesome power. I have a 48 inch deck on mine and it really works well even in tall thick grass. Set the deck low or high and let the grass fly! Between this and my dad's 520-H with 60 inch deck we had several acres mowed in no time. Someone will be getting a great mowing machine when they buy yours.
