Delta9Reaper 2 #1 Posted April 30, 2013 Just aquired my first Wheel Horse. I got the 308-8. Not sure which year. Any advice would be very helpful. Tested the motor, I know that the motor is free but is leaking oil from the head. I believe it is a head gasket but I will not know until I start the teardown. It has the Uni-Drive Part Number- 2988185 with the Tach - A - Matic. I know that the ignition switch is shot, and the starter solenoid works great. Delta9Reaper 2 #8 Posted May 1, 2013 I am not sure where the oil is leaking from. I hooked jump cables to the starter solenoid to see if motor was free. Fordiesel69 263 #11 Posted May 1, 2013 This will make the Kohler lovers angry, but wheel horse built the 8HP tractors to physically mount the same attachements as the big block engines (10-16HP). Thus prior owners always seem to overwork the 8HP with too big of decks, or plowing and lugging all the time. You will find it is probably worn out. MarkPalmer 81 #19 Posted May 3, 2013 With the head removed, it is very easy to see the engine condition. If the combustion chamber and piston crown are dry and just have a light, even coating of black carbon and the cylinder wall isn't scored, plus the valves when open don't have a lot of wobble in their guides it should be OK to just put a new head gasket on and run it. If the top of the piston is wet with oil, or you see a clean ring around the outer edge of top of the piston with no carbon that is oily, the rings and/or bore are worn, and putting a new gasket on and running it will most likely give you a machine that will be great in the summer for keeping mosquitos and other flying insects (plus close friends) away from you -Mark- Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
