GT 14 Hydro Gear help/advice needed please.

Recommended Posts

953 nut

I have a 1970 GT 14 with a Hydro Gear trans with a problem. Earlier this year after reading posts on Red Square I deducted that a set of acceration valve springs would solve the problem, "refracman" hooked me up with a source on the springs and I finaly got around to putting them in yesterday. The problim is that the old broken springs had beaten the relief valve cone and releaf valve seat so badley that the cone will not come out on either side, so I can't use the seat puller to remove the seat. Any advice on how to get them out? With the cone and seat locked in place the new springs are not doing any good.

Also, on another posting I see where "refracman" advised that a '73 to '79 Piston to Piston Sunsdtrand could be used to replace the Hydrogear "with a little extra work". I am a fairly good mechanic and since the number of later hydros is much greater I am interested in knowing what is involved. Has there been a posting showing the steps involved?

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.       :text-thankyouyellow:

Dont give up hope yet! You can get them pesky things out. Have you downloaded the manual from here?

you will need only part 4 of the 4 downloads.

On page 49 it will start the servicing of the valve body section, if these steps don't work report back.

Now on replacing the hydrogear to a piston to piston. This will take a little bit of work on the GT14 unlike the rest where its a direct swap.

You will need the drive gear from the donating tractor trans part #5964  ( 33 teeth gear) to replace part # 5956 ( 32 tooth gear ) presently in your trans. You will have to split the case to replace the gear. You will find you have a bit more speed but a bit less torque.

Thanks for the reply,

I did use the manual download you spoke of, I presume if the cones and seat had not been beaten up by the broken spring then a magnet should have been able to remove the cone. I remember reading some place that the motor portion of the hydro gear is unservicable, hope this isn't the case but I may have to replace it. If I have to open the case up it will give me the chance to fix the parking brake while I'm in there! Another option may be to replace the whole unit with a 312 A trans, anybody got any input on this swap?

I don't believe any other trans can be swaped without some machine work, also you will have to swap the axels/ hubs.

With the eaton style i believe you will clearence issues with the pump.

Not saying it can't be done but I would persue repair of the current or look into a direct replacement.
