I am highly interested in this topic as I have a 212-H that I rely on because of its low profile to the ground. The reason being is because I need it to mow an extremely front bank that I have in front of my house. The hydro has been going strong since it has been purchased and even has survived a couple tumbles! I would like to replace the hydro oil with Mobil 1. Is this possible on this hydro? Is there a filter?

rhal what is wrong with your 212-H?

Here is mine:

actually I dont have one but there is one near me at a very low price and I

am wondering if it could be fixed without breaking the bank. the ad just says

bad hydro, tractor looks good and deck also looks good.

Interesting! I am curious to see if they can be serviced or repaired? Someday, I am sure I am going to have to repair mine due to the harsh conditions it works under!

No filter. I don't think they are serviceable except at a specialty shop. I had a 210-H for 20 years that worked great. I know where there is another used trans on a 210.. Don't know it's condition though and if it's the same as a 212.

Is there a way to drain and replace the oil?

I remember from my 210 manual there was no service interval for the hydro.

If you give us the long model number and serial off the tag we can look up which transmission it used.  I would guess it is a peerless but it can be others based on year.

It may be possible to perform a transplant from another brand of mower that has a similar transmission.
