gin 1 #1 Posted April 14, 2013 hi, lets face it, any1 with an unheated garage or shed knows the woes of the @#$%^* cold winter. I did manage to get my kohler k321 swapped to points from the uber expensive solid state ignition module, runs finally.... and put a different hydro pump in on my 69' gt14 ( wow so far its insanely fast and powerful).I figured I'd convert the foot brake on the left side to a speed control pedal before I wire and maybe paint the beast. ( projects are already backing up, seems like every time I have the opportunity to clean / paint / mod / restore , I 'm in a rush to get it back to work. ). Ok its still ugly and I start it with a swipe of a wire to the batt and a alligator clip to the coil but I love this thing. here we go.... I removed the brake assembly linkage and have the foot pedal still in place - I currently do not have and springs attached to the speed control lever or mid hydraulics. I pulled the speed lever all the way back ( full reverse) and threw about a 3-4" bolt w/ nut threw in the hole where the linkage arm that normally attaches to the foot stop control , so it protrudes toward the midline of the vehicle . Next, you can use pretty much any type of stock from flat bar to square . Run a solid line from the brake bolt( from above) to the speed control lever. I had a piece of 3/8" sq bar and basically attached it to the new bolt ( welded a washer on that end) from the foot pedal and drilled a small hole on the other end to match up with the middle of the speed lever hole . I did bend the 3/8 sq rod so everything aligned -basically the rod was angled w/ 2 parallel ends. so I guess it would be like heading south for 4 units turn 20 degrees east and go 10 units then head south for 4 units. I plan on replacing the current pedal with a custom pedal that has a fulcrum is in the middle so I can push on my toes to go forward and push on my heel to go backward -for now u have to pull up under the pedal to slow/ stop / reverse. At this point the whole project took about and hour or so and I'll try to get some pics After the fact I might suggest using an adjustable rod between the 2 attachmet points . I just grabbed a 1/8 drill bit to extend the travel arc of the pedal forward a little bit to give the foot level a longer swing. I probably lucked out on my guestimates but an adjustable length rod may have saved me from this step although it was rather quick as I only cut about 8 holes that broke off easily w/ pliers and smoothed out w/ file. hope this isn't to confusing w/o any pics. oldredrider 2,553 #2 Posted April 18, 2013 Sounds like an interesting project. Would love to see pictures...they're worth a 1000 words.
thedude 14 #3 Posted April 18, 2013 How difficult was it to replace that pump, I have heard GT14 are a bear to work on. I have a 71 and it leaks from the pump......bad, but it could still pull the a-hole out of an elephant. Mine too is pretty ugly!
bitten 134 #4 Posted April 18, 2013 Sounds like a great idea. I have a 69' also and it would be nice to have a set up like that. I dont have the slightest idea on how to do pictures and hate to ask but I would really like to see it.
