pats854 6 #1 Posted April 13, 2013 My 854 money pit is now giving me trany problems. It only goes into one forward gear. It wont go into any other gear including reverse,I took out the shift and sprayed some Kroil just in case it was a simple matter of stuck forks. Any ideas? stevasaurus 22,872 #2 Posted April 13, 2013 Welcome to Red Square That should be a #5025 transmission...one of the best and easy to work on. Need more info. Was it OK before? did you hear and noise? Does it have oil in it and how does it look? Did you try to slide the forks with a large screwdriver when you had the shifter out? Fill us in a little. There wasnt much oil in it.However it really didnt run very long.As far as noise is concerned, I seems quiet., I will see if I can move the forks with a large screwdriver. I beleive the gear that works is 2nd or 3rd. My father tried to take one apart years ago without sucess, so I am little reluctant to try cracking it.He worked on helicopter gear boxes and had a hard time with it. Am I overly optimistic thinking that the forks are stuck due to rust? Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
stevasaurus 22,872 #4 Posted April 14, 2013 Rust may be the right answer. Try the screwdriver thing, but do not force. You can shine a flashlight down the hole and maybe see if it is rust. Also, stick a small rod or something that will fit through the hole to check the oil level and what it looks like. Depends on what you see, what you may have to do. We have threads with plenty of pictures and videos of tearing down, fixing and putting back together the 5025 transmission. Before you start thinking about splitting the trans, let's try a couple of things first. Check out this video...not your trans, but it is the same guts inside and works the same way. Should help you understand what you are trying to do... If it looks like a little rust...drain the oil and fill the transmission (to the top) with diesel fuel...let sit a couple of days. Try, once in a while, to move the shift forks with that screwdriver. If the forks loosen, put the rear end of the tractor on blocks. Take off the guard and drive belt...turn the input shaft by hand...counter-clockwise...in all the gears. If you can turn the input shaft in all gears and it feels OK (smooth)...like nothing is stuck in the gears...drain the diesel. Put in 2 qts of diesel and run the tractor (on blocks) in all gears...about 5 minutes in each gear. Repeat the last steps if you think it needs it. If all is OK...fill trans with 90w oil until it starts to run out the oil level check plug. Some of the seals may start to leak, but you can replace them without splitting the trans. pats854 6 #5 Posted April 14, 2013 I will head out for some diesel. The ball at the end of the shifter shifter had a sticky rusty coating. This tractor has been in the family for close to 30 years. dont belive anyone ever changed the the gear box oil, I should have known better. I've rebuilt the motor, starter generator and didnt think to do simple maintenance. My only concern it that it did shift ok. until just recently. I am hoping that the oil just sludged up and is gumming up the works. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
pats854 6 #6 Posted April 15, 2013 Good news. I dumped a gallon of diesel in last night. I ran the motor and put the tranny into the one gear that worked and ran it for a while. I then left it for a few more hours. Now it would shift into all of the gears, The only problem was the drive pulley would not stop turning the gear box. I could only shift gears with the motor off. I went for broke and had my son drive it around the block. By the time he got back, the drive pulley was working properly. We then drained the diesel, which now looked like melted milk chocolate, and replaced it with some 90w. He then completed an aeration job for a neighbor wth a hitch. stevasaurus 22,872 #7 Posted April 17, 2013 Excellent...glad it worked for you. If you had the belt guard off, that is why the pulley would not stop. The belt guard acts like a clutch and funnels the slack in the belt toward one of the pulleys when you push in the clutch peddle. I would change out the oil again this fall.
