thehorse 221 #1 Posted April 12, 2013 I have a 416-8 I picked up and needs tires. I found a used set of 23x8.5-12. The original size are 23x9.5-12. Would it be a problem to use the tires I found? The guy also has 23x10.5-12 but I am afraid they would not work with chains. Any ideas?
leeave96 487 #2 Posted April 12, 2013 (edited) The 23 x 8.5 - 12 tires will work fine. Edited April 12, 2013 by leeave96
Wheel-N-It 2,969 #3 Posted April 12, 2013 I have 8.5s on my 416. They work just fine.
GlenPettit 1,717 #4 Posted April 12, 2013 Your metal Wheel Rims are probably the standard 7-8" wide and perfect for the 8.5" rubber tires you just got, and the 9.5" will also work fine, but the wider 10.5" tire would bulge out some, the problem is that on a fast tight turn, it could pop off, slide off the wheel rim (there are more expensive special order wider metal rims for these wider tire). Also, if you inflate the 10.5" tire on a 8" wheel rim to 20# psi, it may pop-off more easily in use. For lawn mowing, always use just a softer 10# psi. A wider tire like the 10.5" gives you a wider-bigger "footprint" on the ground, which means less psi on the grass, which means a softer and more gentle pressure on the lawn, especially when it is very wet. Chains are measured by the outside circle of the tire, all three wheels have basically the same outside circle (approx. 72"), just a little less chain on the side-wall. Your new set of tires will work fine. Good Luck.
Don1977 604 #5 Posted April 12, 2013 I have 23-10.5-12 0n 7 inch rims they round up on the tread if you run 20 PSI in them. This picture as in 1989 when I put them on. They still look just about the same.
SousaKerry 502 #6 Posted April 12, 2013 I have a set of 10.5" and have no problems whatsoever. They also look a little beefier with the wider foot print. I also use them on the puller for the turf tire class with no problems
Chevydave 25 #7 Posted April 12, 2013 I bought a set of wide rims for a '89 520 HC and put the 10.5 wide tires on my 416-8. They looked great but... I have a 42" side discharge deck and the tires rub on the deck wheels. I had to pull them off and use them for snow blowing with chains.
thehorse 221 #8 Posted April 12, 2013 Would I then need to go with wider rims to accomodate the 10.5's????? Nice horse and thanks to all for the info.

RussRenfroe 0 #17 Posted May 14, 2021 So I'm having a hard time find front rims for my 857. 3/4 bore...3.5 wide...I couldn't find 9s...and my rims are toast. So I bought 16x6.5. 8nhs. So I didn't expect my inside rims to be so religious after blasting. Can anyone find a rim that 3.5 bore wide. 3/
Warning:Unsupervised 82 #18 Posted May 15, 2021 Sorry, I don't have any that size. fwiw- The 3/4 dia is common and you can use a spacer behind the rim if you have one thats more narrow. Just be sure your spacer only contacts the inner race and not the bearings themselves. I've had homemade spacers (galv pipe) on my B100 -8 & my 414-8 without issues almost 10yrs now, I put a big washer on first, then spacer, then wheel. All good! I put narrow tires on mine to steer easier due to health reasons. Best of luck on the search..
kpinnc 12,743 #19 Posted May 16, 2021 10.50 rear tires will work fine with 7.5 rims- if they are turfs. Maybe 2 ply cleats, but the better ones are 4 ply minimum. That makes them very stiff across the cleats. 10.50 on my 7.5 rims in the pic.
