Transmission Swap / Parking Break Question

Recommended Posts

brandonozz

I am replacing the transaxle on a '79 D200 with a transaxle from a '77 D200.  My question is about the parking pawl on the donor trans.  The '79 has the external parking break on the hydro motor which I will reuse on the install and really dont want to use the parking pawl that is curently in the '77 trans and would like to remove the pawl.  Has anyone ever done this?  Is there a Plug anyone has used to fill the hole in the '79 case?  The '79 case has the area where the pawl would come thru the case casted solid.

The only other option would be to install the pawl and just not use it.  If I have to do that does anyone know what seal the pawl shaft uses - SKF/CR?

Thanks for any advice!

Well guys, I guess I'll ask this question another way.  :)   If you were installing a transaxle in a D would you replace the seal on the parking pawl?  From looking at the dipstick it appears the pawl will be below the level of the oil and a potential place to leak if the seal is bad but..... the seal is no longer available from Toro.  Do you guys know of a different type seal to use or are these seals not known to leak very often.  This trans did sit for three years so it could be dried out.  I really don't know what the seal looks like because I haven't removed it from the case because I really don't know what my options are about replacements and didn't want to damage it.

I have the case apart and cleaned up and ready to put back together but am on the fence about reinstalling the pawl or just removing it and plugging the hole - maybe with a freeze plug or something similar from Napa or the like.

Please, give me your 2 cents.

Thanks in advance!

I got a parking brake pawl seal to use in my 1276 from Napa. Not sure if its the same seal that is used on the D, but it was SKF 4911.

Thanks Mike,

I looked at the dimentions of the seal and it looks pretty close to what I need based on the dimentions of the shaft and hole.  Bore looks real close to 5/8" and the shaft is a 1/2".  I'm going to go ahead and replace with a new seal before I put it back together as preventative maintenance.

Thanks for the information!
