Getting Ready For Mowing Season

Recommended Posts

Charlie Smith

Hey there, finally the south England (UK ) has been blessed with some nice warmer weather, grounds all dried out and ready for mowing, so today I got the old cutting deck out of the back of the shed and had my first cut, had a few problems putting the deck back on but got there in the end. And didn't think the blades would cut much as they where blunt but surprisingly they left the garden with a nice bright green spongy grass.

Nice Raider Charlie...yep spring is in the air.  We had a bunch of rain last night, and the grass is 3 shades greener today. :)

Very nice.  I picked-up a 36 inch RD deck for my 314-8 yesterday.  I've had a couple of these before, but sold them with other tractors.  IMHO, they give the best cut of any of the Wheelhorse decks I have used.  Reason I got another 36 inch RD deck was to have a tractor that would load-up in my little Nissan truck with the deck fitting between the wheel wells.  Also, allow me to move the 314-8 into the basement door with a deck in place - vs a 42 inch or larger deck.

Yes, a nice recliner I've got fitted there ;) lol, and I don't put the beer down, don't need a holder I got hands, good job these things are easy enough to steer with just one hand :P, and leeave96 I got a new shed/store for my raider 10 over the winter, put the deck back on it earlier today and guess what..... It doesn't fit through the door only by a tad, the wheels of the deck come out an inch too much :( more work for me tomorrow, lol

Glad you finally got some dry weather Charlie. Thank goodness its April. I was getting sick and tired of Winter, although I know my Winters are much milder than most of the Red Square members. I really enjoy your stories and your pics Charlie. Please keep them coming this way.

Thank you, :D I shall keep more coming, and Neil.. You know the battery tray, it has that little bar that bolts across the open end to keep the battery in....well the 'car' battery I've got on there is an inch too long :( so we can't get the bar to bolt back on, so unfortunaly we need the bundgey there to stop the battery from falling out. Now there is two ways around this, 1) get a right fitting battery. 2) weld a longer bolt thread to the original so the bar can bolt down,

I have 3 horses with cutter decks, but have never mown with them.

I have used my trusty Dixon for 18 years until last year this happened   :banghead:

I think one of the horses will be put to use until I find the motivation to repair the damage!

Wheel-N-It

It just self destructed? Or was that operator error???

that was self destruct at 4000rpm!   Deck rot and a lot of tension it just gave up, I really need to see if it is salvageable. Getting any Dixon spares in the UK is pretty well impossible. When I worked in the US I could cheat and brings spares back :)  A cutter deck would be pushing it :D

My cheap-o walmart U1 battery is starting to bite the dust again (barely able to crank it over fully charged, and ozzing everywhere) after 3 years on my 68' Raider and I am looking into a new battery for winter as I now have a plow setup. I was thinking of either getting the original 22NF battery that came with it or running a mazda mita battery which is a U1 size. Is the AGM worth the extra money over the 22nF even in the smaller size? I think the vibrations keep killing the cheapo batteries and I am trying to make sure I can leave it out in the cold and not have a problem starting in the winter. It does get down to 0F or below zero every once in a while. I don't think I want to go all the way to a 22nF AGM as it is $200.

      Thoughts?

I am picking away at the k series on the raider10. Basically the Piston blew through at the ring grooves as it appears the rings may have had too large a gap. I can feel a slight erosion of the bore where the ring gaps All lined up, but not even close to catching a finger nail.
I am hoping just hoping out the bore will get it back to round close enough that a ring job will do .
In any case I can measure the bore and report back. Discipline demands that I do not tear this engine down right now as too many things are taking up my time.
Just hoping the gurus can offer a bit of guidance

Just recently had a 10 pinion differential axle gears lose their teeth as shown in this picture from a post in 2014.
Was wondering if others have had this happen and if they determined the root cause and corrective actions.
I am considering replacing the two axle gears and five pinions that were destroyed but did not want the same thing to happen again.
I assume the failure was due to a worn cylindrical spring that I also plan to replace.

Been looking at a lot or Raiders and Chargers lately and was wondering if they all have LSD? I know most of them did but I was wondering if some of the later models might have had the Uni drives instead ?

      Thanks, Robbie.
