steering wheel roll pin idea?

Recommended Posts

posifour11

Was just staring at my toys and the thought came to me.

Has anyone tried a slide hammer to pull a roll pin?

I have no need to try it at the moment and don't even have a slide hammer. Just thought I'd ask for future use.

wouldnt the space in the middle of the roll pin be too small to get much of a rod through

Not sure, but I think there are some that use a screw of some kind.

the best way i found is take a peice of 2x4 drill a 1.5 inch hole in it then cut the board of in middle of the hole then put the flat end of the board againts a wall or tree and the cut end around the wheel were the pin is hold tight againt the board and use a punch with a little hammer will make them come out easy cuase it takes all the deflection out of it and makes it a solid blow on the pin and the pin will punch right in to the wood

Using a roll pin punch should make short work of it.

I use a roll pin punch using the same method Jordan does . I wouldn't use a slide hammer with a sheet metal screw because as the screw gets threaded into the pin it would also expand the roll pin within the hole and that would tend to make the pin more difficult to remove.

John, thanks. I knew there had to be a reason. Didn't think of that.

I have a roll pin punch that fits into my super whoopy Mac Tools air hammer. Talk about making short work of something! :bow-blue::thumbs:

I've found that a standard punch slightly smaller in diameter (but only just) works fine with a small hammer (as already mentioned) but the trick is to place something substantial on the other side of the boss to provide inertia. For a wheel & shaft removed from the tractor an axle stand worked well, with it still on the tractor I use a block of heavy timber with a hole bored in it to allow the pin to move out. Oh, and yeah, you often need a puller to get the wheel off once the pin's out.

Getting the roll pin out was never a problem. Now getting the wheel off the shaft is a whole other story!

That is the real issue with the steering wheels.

I don't have a super whoopy Mac Air Tools hammer like Squonk. I have an old CP with a roll pin punch that works good too. Mike, I think I have air tool envy :tools-hammerdrill:
