1966 656

Originally I bought this 656 because ( believe it or not ) it had an 18 hp. Vanguard in it and it fit without any modification. I have a Woods Zero Turn that the engine will fit in. Anyway I finally got around to pulling the engine. About a year ago I bought a new Carroll Stream Honda knock-off, 6.5 hp. electric start.I decided to put that in the 656. It really wasn't that hard to do. I made a 1/4" mounting plate 7"x12" and mounted it to the frame rails. I did have to move the engine farther back than the original to clear the front with the hood. Which meant I had to cut the belt guard and buy a shorter belt. But it turned out OK.

I want to tell you I was impressed with this engine. After hooking up the battery, filling it with oil and gas, I turned the key and that thing started before it turned over twice. It runs really nice and is really pretty quiet too.

I stuck a (real) Honda 5hp in my 656. Works great for cruising around, just a bit light in the front end. Added some weight up front and problem solved.

I would have preferred to put an original engine in it but in my area they are scarce as hens teeth and when you do find one they must be made of gold. These little motors are really easy on your wallet. The only real problem is the throttle is so stiff I don't know how you could hook up the original cable and make it work. I just left this one with all the controls on the engine so you have to reach up there to raise it up or down. In my opinion it's a small price to pay for a nice running tractor instead of one that just sits in the shed.

Well I decided she needed some new paint. It has finally been warm enough here to "Get'er Done"! So here are a couple more pictures. Still have to do the wheels but she looks pretty good HUH!
