New starting quirk

Recommended Posts

Got a C-141 that has been starting and running just fine. When I let it set for a week or two I always have to let it turn over a few times to get fuel back up to the carb which is no problem. After that it runs just fine and always fires right off after shutting it down. Now when I let the tractor set for a week or two, when I go to start it I get the usual spinning of the motor till gas fills the line back up but the quirk is before she starts I get a big back fire. Then she starts and runs just fine. I can even turn it off fire it right back up with no problems at all. What in the heck causing the back fire? The points looked fine and are in spec. This just started right out of blue. It's got maybe 200 hrs on it after I put new rod, piston and valves in it. Have not pulled the head yet to take a look. It's not a little back fire but a back fire that tells the neighbor hood I am starting my tractor. Kinda remines of the O'l Beverly Hill Billys Jaloopy hand crank start.

My guess would be that your float is sticking. It may be allowing too much gas to flow into the engine before the float rises and shuts off the float vale.

It is fireing on vapors before the float bowl has been filled. I have changed the fuel pumps on my newer horses to the old pre 1966 pumps with the primer lever on them. You pump the lever a few times before starting and it fires right up. You can find them on Ebay from time to time, just look at the photos and you will see if they have the primer lever. I'v done this on my GT 14 and 312-8 and they should fit any Kohler with a fuel pump. Cost is about $ 20.00 with shipping.
