c160 8 speed drive belt routing

Recommended Posts

GuffdaStuff

ive been working on my c160 for a month or so now and just about have it done just some fine tuning left but she runs like a champ!!   one thing im not sure of is how i have the drive belt routed around the input pully on the differential....it doesnt seem there is enough contact between the belt and pulley.    i have the belt routed over the top of the dpring loaded idler pully right now so the belt forms somewhat of a triangle formation.  i have seen other pictures where the belt almost wraps completly around the input pully and on the bottom side of the spring loaded idler pully.  are the autos and 8 speeds different?   maybe i dont have the right parts?   pictures would be a huge help thanks

8-speeds use a V-idler and the belt travels over it.

Hydro models use a flat idler and the belt travels under it.

Remember your belt guard must be in place for the clutch action to work properly. The bottom lip on the guard supports the loose belt which forces the slack to the engine pulley.

ok thank you for that info!   i did not know the guard had to be on for it to work right....i was using it the other day with it off and yes the belt did not have slack when clutch was engaged...the input pulley never even stopped spinning!     but i guess i have it right thank you for your help

I am trying to find a service  manual on how to tighten the main drive belt for the transmission on a 1986 312-8 model 21-12k803 lawn tractor. You help would be appreciated. Thanks.

There is no adjustment. Provided the belt is not worn too much and the pulleys are the original size it should work. On the left side is a spring that pulls on the pedal linkage and it should keep the belt tight. Possibly the spring is stretched or weak? It hooks into a cast iron web above the left axle housing.
