1971 Bronco 14 Auto resuscitation

Recommended Posts

caseybgilbert

Well, now that my '82 C-195 is in proper working order, I began working on the '71 Bronco 14 Auto with the K321 today. This thing probably hasn't been cranked in 15 years.

After replacing the battery and spending a couple of hours on prep work prior to turning the key, I was able to get it running. I didn't let it run more than 10 seconds...just long enough to ensure it gets fuel and spark sufficient to fire. Since I know it will run now, it is time to purchase some needed parts (I hate buying parts for an engine that has no hope of running!). The throttle and choke cables are frozen up, carb leaks fuel, etc etc. I have ordered the throttle/choke cables, fuel petcock, carb gasket kit, and spark plug lead wire. That is all that I have noticed for now that definitely needs to be replaced.

What are some things that I should definitely check out on this particular motor? The last thing I want to do is throw the rod or something like that because I failed to pay attention to a known weak point. I have read several times on this forum that the balance gears have a tendency to come apart and wreak havoc on the crankcase. What should I listen for to make sure they are doing ok?

Since the only attachment I have for it is the tiller and it won't be used for work very often, I plan to actually do a partial restoration on it. Not a complete tear-down and rebuild but at least sandblast the sheet metal and give it a new finish with new decals, etc. Mainly to just keep it from rusting away.

Here is a picture of it as of now. Don't judge on the condition of the shed. This is where it has sat for the past 15 years.

You sure you want to sand blast that??  Get the coating of dust off that and it will be a fine looking machine......

I can't see from that picture just what kind of shape the tractor is in. Personally I don't sand blast the paint off. I use aircraft paint stripper for paint removal and do blast the really rusty stuff. But I do feel better about one I've worked on when it looks good too. I'm not a purest who believes it should look original with years of patina on it.

Here is the Bronc 14 I did several years ago. Wish I would have known I could get $450 for that seat.

Trouty, I would love to just give it a good shine and call it a day but the hood and dash support both have a considerable amount of rust that can't be seen in the picture. I'm afraid if I don't do anything about it, it will end up eating a hole in the hood.

Looks like it will be a nice machine with some work. The  "expensive" 2 piece seat (at least the back) looks good too. Be careful with any messing around you do with the wiring on that breakerless ignition, it can be costly if you blow the trigger switch or coil.

Irv, thanks. I'll take extra caution when dealing with the ignition components. The seat is in great shape with no actual tears. It has just come un attached from the seat frame at a couple of places.

Looks like a very solid old :wh:, and with a K321 she should have plenty of grunt.

Thanks for the tips so far. I have yet another question.

I am needing the pull knob that goes on the clutch lever. I don't have a parts diagram for the 71 Bronco but I do have the diagrams for the 72. The Toro part number I find for this knob on the 72 Bronco is B693. I have spent the past 30 minutes or so searching pretty vigorously for this item online and have been unable to find anything.

Does anyone know where I can find one?

Does anyone have a picture of one so I could at least see what it looks like?

I'm assuming it is fairly similar to the clutch knob on my C-195.

If I'm unable to find one, I'll just have to make one. Maybe lathe something out of oak and put a nice stain on it! haha.

Sure the part number is not 6129? It was used on about 175 models 1969-1989.

Should still be available from Toro

My mistake. You are after the knobs on the idler pully arm.

Possibly item #4

the broncos have a electric clutch switch. the 71 bronco has push - pull throtle & choke cables, the 72 has up & down T handle cables.  a way to free up the push - pull cables is to remove then from the tractor, slip them through a small funnel then take electrical tape and wind it around tthe endso when you pull the funnel back it seal the cable into the funnel, then clamp into the vice with the knob hanging down & fill the funnel with penitrating oil.  let sit  & start to twist , bend, rotate to get the oil down into the cable sheath. then start  working the cable in an out. i've saved many cables this way. plus the aftermarket p-p cables arent that great compared to the original equipment.  i have both 71 7 72 broncos & they are my favorite horses. good luck with yours. I don't know why I called it the clutch knob. It is the idler lever knob/handle that I am referring to. I guess since it disengages the drive, I just thought of it as a sort of clutch.

Garry, it probably is item number 4. It does look like it would be similar to the knob/handle on my 195.

Jay, thanks for the tip about the cables. I have read on here how several people have had problems with the aftermarket cables. I'll probably put the aftermarket ones on and then swap them out for the originals if/when I'm able to free them up using your method. The choke cable had a little bit of wiggle so I'm sure I can free it up. However, the throttle cable had 0 wiggle. It will probably take a while to break it free.

I received the new throttle and choke cables today. They are Stens parts so hopefully they have at least a little bit of quality. I also received the carb rebuild kit. Now, I just need to find the time to do the labor and install these parts.

So far, I have replaced the throttle and choke cables, changed all fluids, new plug, new battery, tire slime in the original (I'm guessing) Wheel Horse Turf Saver tires, ,and lubed all of the points. I ended up installing a new Walbro carb. I tried and tried to clean the original out with no luck. Even after multiple soakings in cleaner. The 'ole horse runs like a champ now. And, the tiller works!

Can anyone shed some light on what this part is? I believe it would go along with a mower deck for the Bronco possibly?

My '68 Raider 12 has this hanger on the mower deck.

Thanks. It is the hanger for the mower deck. And, while clearing out an over-grown area at the property, I discovered an old mower deck all but covered up by composted leaves, etc. I haven't pulled it out yet to see exactly what kind of condition it is in or what model it is, but I'm sure all of the movable parts are going to require a great deal of attention.
