1988 312-8 8 speed trans fluid change

Recommended Posts

I was tuning up my 88' 312-8 yesterday and drained out my transaxle fluid. It was nasty because the person I got the tractor from didn't change it. When I went to fill it back up with the 90 weight I could only put about 1/2 qt of fluid in before it came back out of the fill hole. I have been reading how to clean it out with kerosene and flush with cheap oil until it comes out clear. I am wondering if there may be another reason it will not accept the 2 qts that it is supposed to have.  The tractors SN is 21-12k805   27990. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. John

I may have fixed my own problem by reading more threads.. I will put it in the dipstick tube.

If you can get a bolt out of the top of the tranny it will let the air out of it as you pour the gear oil down the dipstick tube. Makes the whole job go much faster (and less messy!).

Thank you kindly for the advice. I managed to flush it twice with kerosene and it came out clear so I ran some transmission fluid through, flushed that and now I will put in the gear oil tomorrow. John

Sounds like you may have it figured out.  I like to put the oil in through one of the seat bolt holes...it makes it more accurate to check with the dip stick because you are not pouring oil down that hole. :)   It may only take between 1 1/2 qts to 2 qts to fill.
