Whmaverick 54 #5 Posted March 27, 2013 Wrap masking tape around the axle and lube it before sliding the new one on. This will protect the new seal from tiny nicks that could cut the seal, don't ask me how I know. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
doc724 925 #6 Posted March 27, 2013 Maverick, Did you emery cloth the axles before sliding the seal on? I have to do this seal replacement too and was looking for input. Also, if you wrap the masking tape around the axle, it has substantial thickness. Doesn't this make the install tight (even with lube)? Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Trouty56 567 #7 Posted March 27, 2013 Using emory cloth should be done to remove any burrs. The use of tape...I used scotch starting from the inside out....is mainly to protect the seal from cuts at the keyway. I do the whole length and spay lubricant. doc724 925 #8 Posted March 27, 2013 Thanks for the tips Bob I kind of guessed that the keyway would be the culprit. I like the idea of scotch tape. What have you been using for an arbor to tap the seal into place? I have to split the transmission for a different reason, so would you recommend installing the seal before I reassemble the two halves (this must have been the procedure at the factory) or installing it after assembly and sliding the seal over the axle end? While I have it apart, I plan to install a new seal on the brake shaft-no keyway on this one! Don Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Trouty56 567 #9 Posted March 28, 2013 I only had a trans apart once and I put the seals in when I had it apart. I still taped the axles and lubed them. It is easier to put the seals that way. When the trans is together and you put the seals in there is an appropriate sized PVC pipe you can use. I don't know the size. Don't get close to the rubber when tapping it in. I used a hub once and I think it pinched the rubber part of the seal and it leaked right away. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Whmaverick 54 #10 Posted March 28, 2013 Sounds like something is hanging up. Try starting it up and just try using the lift first. If the lift is erratic I'd say it's in the pump. Has the oil and filter been changed? This is why I got 2 parts tractors with hydro's in them. These sundstrands seem to be getting tired all over. If you want to test the trans in the shop jack it up and hook a belt on the pulley and run it off another tractor. Doc724, The factory uses a thin, smooth plastic shield tapered to a nipple point that slides on and off easy. I prefer installing the seal after any case work, and use a peice of PVC pipe long enough to reach the length of the axle and tap with small sledge sideways. Of course as discussed, thin wrap of tape, lapped out, and lube. Edit, Trouty56 replied as I was typing, seems we agree.
