First I used Imageshack, circa 2003..it was fine for a few years..then it began to seriously suck..
photos would be randomly deleted (by imageshack) after 6 months to a year..

and they blamed me! by replacing many of my photos with:

forbidden.gif

but there was no violation, and no user request..

it was all them, just deleting images..finally I just gave up..

Next was photobucket..it too was ok for awhile, until I made my snowblower webpage,

that gets heavier traffic than most of my other pages:

http://gold.mylargescale.com/scottychaos/Ariens/

So photobucket would take down my photos for "exceeding bandwidth"..photos would be gone for a month at a time..

making all my webpages useless..

(all my webpages are just "hobby" pages..just for fun, not business..but still, it was annoying)

sure, I really did exceed bandwidth, for the free hosting..I admit that..

Finally I wised-up and realized I need to pay for better photo hosting..

(and based on my experience with photobucket, I certainly wasn't going to pay them! ;)

With the free photos hosts, "you get what you pay for"..

pay nothing..get nothing..

So I did a bunch of research, read a lot of reviews, and settled on smugmug:

http://www.smugmug.com/
http://scotlawrence.smugmug.com/

been using them for a few years now, and haven't had a single problem! I love it..

Its $3.33 a month..you pay once a year, $40 a year.

if you want to try it, you can use my email address to get $5 off for the first year..

(and I get $5 off my next renewal, because of the referral)
use scotlawrence at gmail dot com

wish there was a way to transfer my pics to flikr .

Unfortunately, if you were to remove your pics from PB and transfer them to Flikr, any RedSquare picture that is linked to PB would be lost.

That is true. i have alot of pics on alot of forums. i tryed PB again last night and i could not get past around 3 pages worth of pics . i had 70pgs . the new format trys to load all you pics at once so you can scroll down , it just takes forever or freeze's up on me.

It makes it a little better if you edit your settings. Here's a list that have made my "new" photobucket a little more tolerable....

  • right side, click on your login name and choose user settings
  • choose Albums from the options at the top
  • I selected sort by Newest first (this should put the newest uploaded picture first in your list... you know... where you need it because that's why you just uploaded it!)
  • I checked the box that says sort all folders the same way (pretty sure this used to be automatic, but this new version has been sorting them funny.)
  • I selected the kinds of links I need (most of us use IMG or IMG Thumbs the most, if you use your pictures on ebay or a webpage, you may also want to click Direct link and HTML)
  • I checked the box for Easy Linking (it puts the links back on the first page like they used to be)
  • I turned off the Link back to albums box, but that's your choice,  Don't know what it does, but I don't care for random folks looking through all my pictures.

If you're like me, you've got one go to folder to hold all your forum crap... it is really annoying now that I can't choose to load it by page.  Having my IMG link right there on the first page is the biggest thing for me. Makes it so much faster to put multiple pictures in a post.  I hate having to click into a picture to find the link, then back, then into the next, then back...etc.....etc......

Hope that helps some of you a little.

the one thing I did was put my picture's in different sub albums ( 701, rj35 c195 etc.etc.) this works well for when your doing a restore on a tractor but if you move anything that you already posted on redsquare you will

lose that link to the picture.

Ah yes....... Photobucket.

As of right now, I have 3332 images in 99 albums. I have the Plus20 account @ $24.95/year. I have only used around 13% of the available 25.2GB storage space & have unlimited bandwidth.

I also have 179 images in a different account - made when I was having problems with my first account.

If that's not enough to keep track of, I also have this one at Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/wheelhorse/

*IF* you decide to move your pictures from one place to another and the original goes away, the links will break here BUT if you give me the old / new addresses for each, I can change all the posts.  So if you move from Photobucket to pictureplalace I need the URL's like

From------------------------------------To

photobucket.com/userxxx/pic1.jpg picturepalace.com/images/members/memberxx/pic1.jpg

I can do variations on that as well like all images in an album located at ..... to -----

Holy URL Batman...that sounds like a ton of work for you, but nice to know it is possible to do that with out messing up the old posts. :bow-blue:

I have found that if you click on the "library" tab at the top of the new Photobucket, your albums show up on the left side and it works prety much like the old Photobucket. :)

I changed to the new Photobucket a few weeks ago and the album was all one page. Went there today and it had pages like the old Photobucket.

I just use Dropbox and then send links to people I want to share folders or pics with.  My photos are uploaded from my camera and phone automatically and synced on other devices so I have several offline copies in addition to the online files.  I think they started me out with 5Gb free but every couple months they raise it for no reason.  I'm up to 54Gb free.  I can share most of my data with the 54Gb of space.  I have a few things over 100Gb but I just transfer them with a 128Gb usb drive.
