mrcubcadet 0 #1 Posted March 16, 2013 I have collected Cub Cadet and IH tractors for years (I'm a teenager), and have recently gotten an interest in Wheel Horse's, as well. The Wheel Horses that I currently have are a Commando 6, that is being made into a puller...and a C-101, that I just got a few nights ago. Yesterday, I piddled with the C-101 for a little while...Got it to run rough with the choke out only by jumping directly to the battery, and that's about it. This evening, I got the wiring issues worked out, did a quick carb cleaning, changed out spark-plug with a new one, and changed out the front tires/wheels. Now, the tractor will start-right up, run really well at around mid to low throttle (choke-disengaged), and drive fine...However, I still have some high-throttle carb work to work out. All in all, it's mostly ready to go...Just odds n' ends left to work on. So, being that this is my second Wheel Horse, I would like to make this one a worker. I've got a slot hitch off of the Commando 6 that I will install on the C-101, and I would like to find or make a sleeve-hitch adapter as well, to use my Brinly attachments that I have acquired for the Cubs...I would also like to find a deck for the tractor. I have a friend that picked up a Charger 12 recently with a deck (size unknown). He is now trying to sell me the running tractor and deck for $250. I have a mule drive, but would the deck itself mount-up to the C-101? Besides frame length, I don't see an issue, but I do want some more knowledge from some more-Wheel Horse-experienced people than me...And also, is $250 for a running, straight Charger 12 decent? A steal? Or a bad price in your area? Very happy to become a part of this community!...I hope to be here for a long time!

mrcubcadet 0 #3 Posted March 16, 2013 Welcome. Nice tractor. Take care of it. These folks are a wealth of knowledge. Thank you!...I do have a lot of garden tractor projects in the means of doing, but I hope to do a quick paint job on her this summer, until I get time to strip her down and lay a nice coat with the gun. Kevbo 80 #4 Posted March 16, 2013 Nice C-101 bud! I have one too that I got for $260 without a deck pictured below: It has a decent worker paint job but I would like to smooth out the rough areas and do a better job someday. I do not have a charger so I'm unsure about deck compatibility but I assume if it has a mule drive it should be compatible? I am sure someone will chime in and confirm that. What do you know about this Charger 12? How's the engine run? Transmission ok? Tires? Any really rough rust happening? All this will affect your price. I would always counter offer unless it is really a steal! Try and determine a price that won't "offend" the seller but still pull in a deal! Give us some more info and I'll throw a number at you for fun I think your C-101 would clean up real nice with a nice power washing and some 0000 steal wool rub down with WD-40 This was the results from that process on my 1075: After power washing, 0000 steel wool with WD-40: Try that first and post pics!! rustyoldjunk 127 #5 Posted March 16, 2013 Hi Mrcub,i believe you and i talked just a few evenings ago about a Sears XL10 custom and your Cub O.Glad to see you here.BTW the frames are the same length on your 101 and the charger so that wouldn't an issue but i think the Charger may use the old style deck mounting system.I don't think $250 is bad for The charger with deck as long as it runs/mows and is in decent condition. Wheel-N-It 2,969 #6 Posted March 16, 2013 Welcome to RS. Sounds to me like you are a Cub Cadet guy who has an interest in Wheel Horses. I'm just the opposite. I am a Wheel Horse guy who has an interest in Cub Cadets. I have only one, a good running 1650 with a 50A deck and a 42" blade. Anyway back to you, I would say based on your discription, $250 is a fair price to pay for the Charger. It is a Charger 12 which means it has the 12hp Kohler. Thats a great LAGT engine in most anyones opinion here. Also important for me is it has the same overall dimensions as the 300 and 400 series Wheel Horses which is a good fit for my height and weight. Even though I don't need it, if it were close by and offered to me I am quite sure I would buy it if it for $250 if it is clean and good running, and the mowing deck is quiet and not beat up, and too if it does not need additional money spent on it other than a good Spring tune-up. Let us know if you purchase it or not.
Tankman 3,520 #7 Posted March 16, 2013 Sounds great Mr. Cub Cadet! You'll love the Stallions! I had two Cubs, let 'em go to make more room for new members of the Herd. I did prefer the older Horses now, I'm enjoying my latest, a '90 520-8 (I like the "noise"). You're hooked! Welcome to Red Square and do keep the forum up-to-date! Jake Kuhn 1,556 #8 Posted March 16, 2013 I'm 13 and very addicted to the horses! Always glad to see younger guys join here. Your c101 looks like a nice little tractor. I would think the charger 12 would be a pretty good deal at 250. ~Jake
Sparky-(Admin) 21,547 #9 Posted March 16, 2013 The Charger probably does not have the same deck mount or mule drive setup as your C-101. I think there was a kit put out to update the Charger/Raider tractors to Attach-a-Matic which your C-101 has. The Attach-a-Matic setup has been the way attachment attach since 1973 so all attachments for the C, 300, 400, most 500 series, and a few of the B series (B-60, B-80, B-100) will fit your 1978 or 1979 C-101. I can tell ya just about anything you need to know about a Cub Cadet or a Kohler, but kinda brain-dead when it comes to Wheel Horses! Haha Sounds great Mr. Cub Cadet! You'll love the Stallions! Welcome to Red Square and do keep the forum up-to-date! I am starting to get the WH fever!...I never would have thought that I would like another garden tractor brand as much as Cub Cadet. You see, I'm an International Harvester farm tractor guy, so Cub Cadet fits right into the equation...It's all good, though...The Cubs and International's are ok with the Horses...They seem to have mistaken them for one of their own, due to the red paint! mrcubcadet 0 #13 Posted March 16, 2013 Guys, I've got a local guy bringing over a GT2500 (anniversery special), that is complete with a deck, but is missing the engine. He wants me to look at it, and is willing to sell it to me for $100...I believe that this model has the "Attach-a-Matic" setup, so should everything bolt up to my C-100? Callen 64 #14 Posted March 16, 2013 Yes it will. That 2500 looks just like your 101.
can whlvr 993 #15 Posted March 16, 2013 welcome,if the 2500 deck is decent scoop it up,thats a fair price for a parts tractor and a deck, heres another pic of a 101 thats been restored, this one was completely tore down including tranny, you have a nice tractor to start with
mrcubcadet 0 #16 Posted March 16, 2013 Beautiful tractor, can whlvr!...Hopefully mine will look that good, someday! I bought the GT2500!...It was a little rougher than expected, so I actually got it for $80!...Within a half hour, I had the deck off and on the C-101...Even tried it on a little grass!
Sparky-(Admin) 21,547 #17 Posted March 16, 2013 A working deck with a mule drive is well worth the $80 you spent. Plus you have the rest of the tractor to pick over for parts. I see your C-101 doesn't have headlites but the GT2500 does...hmmm.... . Mike..........
mrcubcadet 0 #18 Posted March 17, 2013 Yeah, I'm trying to determine what to do with it...I have the clutch setup and everything off of the original engine...Even though it originally had a Briggs, I have an adapter plate laying around for a Cub-style Kohler oil pan to be mounted on a Wheel Horse frame, along with a Kohler K241 out of a Cub...Thinking about saving this one. mrcubcadet 0 #20 Posted March 17, 2013 Well, it looks like the rest of the GT2500 is leaving sometime this week...I have a buyer!
can whlvr 993 #21 Posted March 17, 2013 not gonna keep it for spare parts when you restore the 101 ?
mrcubcadet 0 #22 Posted March 17, 2013 Well, I was thinking about it...But really, any parts that this 101 might need (very few) are in the same condition, gone, or even worse.
