seat of gold?

Recommended Posts

Don't see anyone else comment about this so I guess I will.  While seeing what's new on fleabay yesterday I ran across a great looking seat, the two peice type, would you beleive it's starting bid is $325?, but you can buy it now for $400. Is this the going rate on these? I would like to get one for my C-100, but at this price I guess I will have to settle for an after market one.

The two piece seats in good shape with the WH logo on the backrest pad command a good price but not that good. What will happen is someone else with a similar seat to sell will scroll thru E-bay and see that one and then list his/hers with a price about the same as the expensive one they just saw. And that will be what inflates the price of those seats.

It sold for 400 with 25 bids. And the lowback with bracket 300 or 400 type went for 127.

I had them bookmarked but was never in the running.

I think good ones are getting real scarce.

If your restoring a tractor to original I could see a high price. but to me they are not  all that comfortable. Combine that with WH's only dumb idea of mounting them on the seat pan with no springs I fell like a circus bear on a tricycle. This seat cost me $100 and I got some used springs. It's the most comfortable tractor seat I've ever been on.

I've heard of "heart of Gold" but for that price, that seat better have something sitting in it instead of yours truly..... :D

Try your local Bass Pro Shop, a boat seat is a great sbstitute tractor seat if you are talking about a worker, not a trailer queen. If you want originality in a 40 to 50 year old seat I guess it is a seller's market.  :wh:

Even if I where doing a restore it would be really hard to spend as much on the seat as you paid for the whole tractor.  That's why it's really nice to get a good seat when you buy a tractor.  Its a big extra and your lucky to get a good seat when you buy a tractor.  That is also why it is good to buy a tractor all ready restored.  They are never going to recoup extras like a 400 dollar seat but you end up enjoying it for a lot less.  But, it much enjoyable  to restore than to buy a queen.

Seats are a pain in the but for me :) .  I hate to spend 300 on a tractor then have to pay 100.00 for a seat.  I bought a Sears GT for 125 and was not going to spend even 50 on a seat so I made a black duck tape seat cover.  I was more proud that I made the cover for 5 dollars than the deal I got on the tractor. It's a fine line though, you don't want to look to much like a redneck :) .

I got it at TSC. The Surplus Center online has them also. Maybe Northern tool also.

The seats look pretty cool. They need more padding. I have one that the seat has been redone and it's very comfortable.

They wouldn't be to bad if they were mounted on springs and you didn't feel like you were sitting on the tires! :soapbox:

You can easily add a pair of seat springs.

Local scrap yard had hundreds of tractors with seats. Of course, slim pickin' lookin' for a decent seat.

The scrap yard charged me $5 a seat, I found two. Cleaned 'em up and yep, painted 'em with Rustoleum High Gloss looked great. While I dissembled the seat, springs went with.

Lots of goodies, shift knobs, hardware, all kinds of stuff.

Sure they are nice seats, if you ask me whoever paid 450 bucks for a seat has more money than brains. It could split the moment he sits on it, especially with that fat wallet in his back pocket! Lol! (or will he even have the balz too sit on it?) Here is the problem, everyone gauges the value of their items on what they have seen one just like it go for on Epay. I can't tell you how many times I've been at the Flea market or a tractor show and I've asked the price on an item and the reply I get is, one just sold on Epay for 500.00 so I'll take 450.00. My reply is always the same, "we ain't at Ebay right now so what is the real price."

I agree Ken. Not to mention the tractor that seat ends up on will not be worth an extra $450 after its all bolted on.

I've owned a couple machines with that seat and to be honest, its not at all comfy!

I know what you mean and how is it "the nation price guide" for something is set by what one nut head payed for it on Ebay?

How many bidders and how many total bids?  I'm trying to make some sense out of this.

The seat that sold for $400.00 had 25 bids from 6 different bidders. The other 3-piece seat auction has been ended saying that the item is "no longer available".

while it would be nice to have an 'original' type seat on a nice restore, for me its just not worth taking the chance on a seat that could crack at anytime, especially if you use the tractor and enjoy it.

i know its a different model seat but i really like the michigan seat company seats that you can still buy new. the v-3500 model is basically the same seat that the company made for some wheelhorses back in the day(except for the logo) and can be had for $50 new. paired with a set of seat springs like pictured above they are a very comfortable alternative that with looking after, will last for many years of use.......
