How does Gear Reduction Steering work?

There are no hydraulics to the system. There are extra gears that reduce the ratio and the force needed to turn the front wheels. It was done to reduce the force needed to turn the steering wheel with that 300 pound 60" deck I would think. It also allows you to turn if you have a Front End Loader on it. I guess they didn't want to add pwr. steering. You have to make sure all the parts are included. The picture above looks like it has all the parts.

Torino, check the gears on the end of the steering shaft, and where they mate to the fan gear. You don't want alot of wear on these gears. If they are worn, you will have to have someone build them up with a welder and them cut them back down to fit nice and tight.

Also check the king pins for looseness where the front spindles pass through them. Also check the hole in the axle where it mounts and pivots in the frame. Make sure the hole is not wallowed out or you will be putting a bushing in there. I don't want you to think you are getting a great deal on it, then having to spend a bunch of money to get it in good shape before you make the swap to your existing tractor.

I have a 1995 520 rolling chassis. The front end is overall in great shape but the gears on the steeering shaft and fan gear are worn a bit more than I would like. That 520 is going to be my repowered project tractor some day.

That's how I thought it worked but thought I saw what looked to be hydraulic hoses in the pic.

If you look close you can see the lift cylinder and the control valve in that pile and the hoses are probably connected to it.

Your right Cowboy, thats a hydro unit with the lift valves and cylinder out of a C195 I parted out, just layin on the same pallet
