coolhandblack 45 #1 Posted March 5, 2013 Hello all, I have been away from Redsquare and tractors for awhile but I am getting the bug again! I may have found one that I am interested in and I am hoping you guys might be able to tell me from the pic what model it is so I can do some research. The add says it runs good and comes with a blade, any ideas on what I should pay for it would be nice as well. Also I must say it is good to be back on this site.
Vinylguy 4,674 #2 Posted March 5, 2013 68 or 69 commando 8? Great looking tractor with what appear to be excellent hard to find hubcaps.
Sparky-(Admin) 21,294 #3 Posted March 5, 2013 Looks like a 1968 Commando 8 to me. If its mechanically sound and the snow-blade isn't all ground down past the cutting edge bolts I would think $200-$300. Those hubcaps are worth good money if sold seperately. Mike............... JackC 617 #4 Posted March 5, 2013 Looks to be a mid to late 1960's model? Those hub caps are worth some money by themselves depending on condition. Maybe $100 to $150 just for the hubcaps. If it is in good running condition and original I would say maybe $300 to $400 without the hubcaps? If you can get if for that including the hubcaps i would go for it. It looks to be in good condition and ready to work.
Shuboxlover 478 #5 Posted March 5, 2013 I saw that one.....If it wasn't a 10 hour round trip for me, it would be in my shed right now. You better get it before someone else does!!!!
coolhandblack 45 #6 Posted March 5, 2013 man Shub you are quick! And yes tomorrow I do believe I am going to be all over it. Ill let you guys know how it works out.
JackC 617 #7 Posted March 5, 2013 I checked out the ad on CL. You can't go wrong for what they are asking unless you have no more room in the stable. I would pay the asking price just to get the hub caps and that is a neat tractor besides. Sometimes they look better in pictures than in person but definitely worth looking at. AMC RULES 37,125 #8 Posted March 5, 2013 (edited) '68 Commando, looks like a keeper...careful with the lights, as they're pretty desirable too. From the model list... 1-4831 1968 Lawn & Garden Tractor Commando 8 4-Speed Kohler K181S-30108D 8 Wheel Horse 5053 1-4832 1968 Lawn & Garden Tractor Commando 8 4-Speed Kohler K181S-30108D 8 Wheel Horse 5053 Edited March 5, 2013 by amcrules00
rmaynard 15,407 #9 Posted March 6, 2013 (edited) 1-4832 1968 Lawn & Garden Tractor Commando 8 4-Speed Kohler K181S-30108D 8 Wheel Horse 5053 For what it's worth, according to all the posts and input here on RedSquare over the last couple of years, the 1-4832 is a misprint and does not exist. There was only 1 Commando 8 made in the US, it was in 1968, and the ID is 1-4831. However, maybe this is the missing 1-4832 that has caused all the confusion. Having said that, I hope someone gets a clearer picture of the decal. To me it appears to be too few letters to read Commando. gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,026 #10 Posted March 6, 2013 Found a 2007 post elsewhere by Stigian and this pic of an ID plate. Sure looks like 1-4832 with 119975 as a guess at the serial number. There was another with serial 119882 posted by Simon Smith. Garry

There was another with serial 119882 posted by Simon Smith. Garry If you notice, I said Commando 8 made in U.S.. There are a lot of numbering oddities for Wheel Horses made in Amnor. But the question remains, is that tag on a Commando 8 or a V8? Stigian's ID tag could just as easily say 1-4852. The serial number on my U.S. made 1-4831 is 391657

rmaynard 15,407 #16 Posted March 7, 2013 So this is just another piece to the numbers puzzle presented by the Wheel Horse production unit in Amnor. Let's get back to the original intent of this thread, to see what coolhandblack has sitting in the shadows.
JimmyJam 542 #17 Posted March 7, 2013 Looks to be a very cool tractor, whatever the late sixties model. Nice find...go pick it up quickly!!! ...and what for the price of hubcaps and lights to boot....have you left your house yet? LOL!
coolhandblack 45 #18 Posted March 9, 2013 still trying to make arrangements to go check it out, the guy who has it sounds like an older fella... said it ran last year when he parked it and he wants to get it running before I come look at it. Cant argue with that... As far as the room in the stables I have ran out of room awhile ago but I dont think that is going to stop me! Tom B, where is Rossville Kansas? tbbahner 27 #19 Posted March 9, 2013 Coolh, Rossville is about 30 mi. west of Topeka on Hwy 24. I live a couple mi. north of town. If ya ever get out this way, stop by for a cool one and we'll swap lies.
coolhandblack 45 #20 Posted March 9, 2013 Tom, Sounds good... same thing goes for you if you're ever down this way for anything. You ever here for the state fair? I usually have to do some traveling to get any wheelhorse related items as there doesn't seem to be alot around here. I did grow up in ohio where there are alot of wheelhorses and that is where I grew fond of them. Here is the 1276 that I freshened up in the past...ended up selling it. I really don't have alot of room right now. I have a single car garage with a couple of small shed but they all seem to be full of 4 wheelers and other stuff. Hopefully in the next year and a half I am going to have a nice shop built in the back yard to give me some more room...

coolhandblack 45 #22 Posted March 13, 2013 Well guys just got back from checking out this wheelhorse... and well I couldn't just leave it there so I bought it. It came with a small pull behind cart and a couple of attachments. From just looking at the decal Im guessing its a 855 1965 Lawn & Garden Tractor 855 4-Speed Kohler K181S-30108A 8 Wheel Horse 5049... am I right? The Hub caps all look great, and the headlight work. I haven't really had a chance to check it over to well yet but will update later with some pics of the attachments... Here are some pics of it. If you guys see something I am missing on it let me know, I think some pieces are miss from the pto... also came with a set of ag tires for the back!
