rj58 repaint

Recommended Posts

Jake Kuhn

Hi guys,

First off, this is not a complete restoration. I have been working on repainting a rj58 I picked up this summer from duke. When I got this tractor it had a locked up tranny, no motor, and missing quite a few parts. I thought I was going to end up parting it out but it has ended up being saved! I just blasted, put a nice coat of primer, and spray bombed with rustoleum on this one. The tranny was gone through, and I have a k91 that came with a parts tractor that is going on it. I am hoping to have this one going in the next month. I still have to fix some stuff on the hood, paint the front wheels which I do have a set of tri ribs to put on, paint the engine, and a couple other small things. Here are a few pics.

Thanks for all the compliments guys. The wheels and seat are rustoleum antique white.

That is looking very nice Jake. I'm glad you decided to refurb it instead of parting it out. Another RJ saved! Rustoleum is a good choice when trying to keep the costs down.

Very nice Jake. Why the rattle can instead of the body shop?

Thanks everyone!

Dave, I went with rattle can on this one because I don't have the time to finish all of my projects. That was going to make 4 restorations and I don't have the time to make them all perfect and I didn't want to put a ton of money in this one. I don't have very much in this tractor so I'm very happy and I can drive it around and not have to worry about scraping it. The other 3 tractors are getting painted at the body shop though.

have to do a couple repairs on the gas tank too, this is a suburban tank I am going to use on it. I would like to of used the correct tank but I don't have one to use. I'll just have to change the straps a little so I can use this.

Suburban/RJ tanks are the same. You can even use one from a 603 series because they are the same size only they have a different filler neck and tank outlet is in the front instead of by the steering wheel.

Looks good!

Yep, I know that. The outlets are just different and I'm pretty sure a suburban tank only will use one of the straps in a rj if you don't modify them.

Looking good Jake, are you going to clear coat the paint?

everything but the motor is just staying the rattle can and not getting cleared. But the motor will get painted with automotive paint so it does not burn off of it.

Here's a small update on the rj. I spent my spring break working on bondoing the hood. This was the first thing I did bondo on myself and this was a great thing to learn on as it does not matter to me if it is absolutely perfect. It was primed friday and I finally got a chance to sand it tonight with 220. Hopefully it can get primed again tomorrow so I can finish it up this tomorrow or friday. I have been working on the painting the wheels painting really thing coats and letting them dry good so I do not get runs like I did the first time than made me spend a couple hrs blasting them back down to bare metal again.  :banghead:  I will get pictures when they are done. Also, here are some pictures of the motor after it was painted, I still need a shroud for it. Hoping I can find something at the mentone swapmeet in about a week and a half. Thanks, Jake
