Suggested sell price of a Work Horse GT-1142?

Recommended Posts

Brian T

Hello:

Homeowner here - my house came with a wheel horse GT-1142.  I paid about $500 to get it running, and worked great for me for perhaps 5 years until the choke went out, and i decided to outsource my lawn.

So, i have a nice Wheel Horse GT-1142 that has been garaged since 83 (not much rust, etc), and seems like would be easy to get into running shape.

Looks like it has all the original parts (seat).  I put it on craigslist yesterday and was shocked to get emails from over 10 people looking to buy it.

Any suggestions on what a fair price is?

Many thanks,

Brian

If you put a price out there you should sell it for that amount.

fair enough.  put it out at $75 OBO.  So left it open to other bids.  Just wondering what may be reasonable.

I  just sold a 1982 GT1848 with no deck for $550 Sunday and the guy drove 180 miles to get it. I don't know about a GT 1142 but as it is in the picture I wouldn't take less that $700 for it. You just don't see Workhorses in that condition in my area.

Here is the one I sold. The guy already had a snow blower to fit it so now I have another one to sell.

I would take it off of craigslist and sell it to someone on here! Someone on here will pay you way more than the 75 and it will go to a good home for sure! ~Jake

$500 would be a cheap price and still probably sell fast, I buy junkers for $75 the 42" deck if it is as nice as it looks, will sell for $250 around me.

You guys have been really helpful, and I have taken it off craigslist as obviously this needs more thought put into it.  Got me thinking that maybe I should keep it and convert it to a snow blower.  I am actually thinking about buying a snow blower anyway, and perhaps i just get this running again, and use this?

I'll apologize in advance for being needy - you guys seem like you know what you are doing, and I feel like an amateur.  But, you don't seem to mind offering advice so i'll ask for more :)

Thoughts on getting a snow blower attachment?  They easy to find?  I'll start googling but your take is appreciated.  Can an amateur like me handle mounting it?  I would think so (I have dropped the deck on this before, can frame and sheet rock, etc, but i am a corporate guy so very much amateur).

So, if this means i get my snow machine, maybe i keep it and deal with my wife complaining about the space it takes up.

Again, thanks but you guys (ladies?) seem to know what you are doing, and I appreciate the advice.

I like the idea of keeping it. A new choke cable from a dealer is about $28 and real easy to swap out. Blowers come up for sale pretty often, they are not a rare attachment. If you can, try to find a tall chute single stage, they throw snow better than the short chutes single stage units. There is also a 2 stage blower but it might be to much for an 11hp Wheel Horse to handle. To use any blower you will definitly need rear wheel weights at a minimun of 50#s each and a set of tire chains.

You can buy a single-stage blower for that machine with ease and for not much dough if your patient. I agree that 11 HP isn't enough to turn a 2-stage blower. Since your near the coast, you shouldn't get too many real heavy snows so a single stage would work well for you. You could also mount a plow for half the cost or less of a blower. Your Workhorse is in great shape and had to have had great care over the years. Fix it and if you hit a bump in the road while changing out that cable, get back on line here and these guys will answer your questions. You may find you have a member living near you that would swing by and help.

my wife hates you guys right now :) as she is looking to get the shed back. Going to call a friend that is good with small engines to see if i can get started.

Will play around with it - has been a few years since i started it, so even though the batter is only maybe 4 yrs old it is probably dead...a little work to do.

Thanks and will check in after the weekend

If I were you, I'd do a refurb, get yourself a snowblower, utility trailer.  You look like you got a nice deck to start with too.  These old tractors are a great work tool and as you can see from this forum, it is a great hobby too.

Take your time, read the forum and enjoy the ride.  Nothing better after a stressful day at the salt mine than tinkering with an old iron tractor.

Good luck,

Bill

You couldn't replace that tractor for $3000 once you get it running. (Except with another used Wheel Horse)

Buy your wife another shed and keep the tractor.

Get the shed, keep the Stallion.

I only have five Horses to feed, take care of that Work Horse!

Adding, "I'm right across the Delaware in Pennsy. Can I pick up the Work Horse

Saturday morning?"

I wonder why the value is thought to be so high on this? I would have thought 450 max. It is a nice Work Horse.... I put my absolutely MINT original 85 310 up for sale at 700 without a single offer. Listed it here and on C/L. Just wonderin.....

Mainly I think it's because one in decent shape is hard to find in my area. The one I just sold is the only one I've had and it was kept outside it's entire life. When I got it it didn't run. had three flat tires and was more brown than grey.

Or the Briggs? I like them as well but I'd like a 16 or 18 hp version.

To clarify my post from up yonder.....

I was only questioning the potentially missing zero. $75 is definitely too low - but I never implied that $750 was the actual value.

If I was in desperate need of that model and had the money, I would consider $300 to $350 to be reasonable - but that's me.

I'll tell you what I think (sorry to take this thread a bit off topic).

I recently put a welder on CL.  I googled going prices for it and set a middle of the road price with a bit of room for negotiating down to my rock bottom price.  You wouldn't believe the e-mails I got with crazy low ball offers and some innuendo that I was some how the crook and/or in desperate need for the $$$'s.

Finally a guy e-mailed and said, what's the best you'll do.  I gave him a price and he said that was a reasonable price for the welder.  The difference was, this buyer knew the welder and a fair market value for it and considered my price reasonable.  I think the other guys were trying to flip what I was selling or were just plain stupid with their offers.  Note, I can understand offering a lower price, it's part of the game.  But some of these slimy jerks are simply crooks in their own right.

So when I go to buy a garden tractor, be a Wheelhorse or Cub Cadet, I go in to it knowing a general fair price and I have no intention of crazy low balling the owner.  I know what it's worth, the supply and demand in my area and pay accordingly.

BTW, the guy came and bought the welder.  He and I both felt like we came away with a fair deal - all good.

OFF MY  :angry-soapbox: box !!!!!

Thanks!

Bill

im not sure what it is about them ken, i never really looked twice at them before and even when i found mine on cl, i wasnt overly excited, except for the fact that it had hydraulics and wide rear wheels and i was looking at it entirely from a parts point of view. but i changed my mind almost straight away. i just think its a little different with the gray instead of red, like all the rest of mine. but its also a very capable tractor with the 18 twin. they are thought of as a stripped down 'economy' model, but my 1848 has everything i could want in a horse........

from the market around here, i think the gt1142 being talked about in this post would be a fair buy at around $250- $300..........

Well if I had it, the deck would get sold first of the mowing season for around $250-300 IF it is a clean as it looks, nice decks sell fast, the tractor running and driving I'd put up for sale for $300 obo with no attachments
