Hydro/manual transmission long term storage

Recommended Posts

I have 2 extra hydro tranny's, that I was going to store long term. They could sit for 2  or 20 years before I need them. They are for B/C series tractors. They will be stored in a dry shed. I was looking for suggestions on how to prepare them for storage. Should I fill the tranny case all the way up with oil to prevent corrosion. Do I turn the hydro pump once in a while, change the oil every so often. I have a  12 and 14 hp kohler motors. I poured a couple of tablespoons of oil in the cylinder, then turned them by hand. I'm looking for a few suggestions.

Definitely fill to the max as condensation form temp change in the shed will be an issue.  I would consider trying to get some of the newer 50w gear oils (or add a bunch of good old STP).  Then try to turn the hydros over so you coat everything.  Hopefully gear oil/STP won't drain off as fast as straight motor oil.

Frankly I would look at a different storage area, especially given the big temp swings in Wisconsin..  I keep my spare hydros in the heated part of my shop.

Thanks, I'll need to do that also, if can find a fill port!
