Tankman 3,518 #1 Posted February 21, 2013 Restoring a wonderful Stallion. The shifter rod has a small roll pin, sticks out approx 1/8" from each side. There is also, a few inches lower, a cotter pin installed. Both items are small, approx 1/16" diameter. What are they for? Do I need 'em?
dbartlett1958 96 #2 Posted February 21, 2013 Tankman, I have no idea regarding your question, but the tractor and the backdrop make a great photo!
Tankman 3,518 #3 Posted February 21, 2013 Tankman, I have no idea regarding your question, but the tractor and the backdrop make a great photo! Thanks Dave! I don't have a clue but, I have seen these pins in the past. I removed them from theHorse shown. Should I replace 'em? That's the question. My bank barn is 1850, 18" stone walls, lofts, ladders, more. Been in restoration for 10 years, More than liveable these days.

Tankman 3,518 #5 Posted February 21, 2013 Not sure I know what your talking about? a picture might help. Sorry Mr. Kelly, removed the roll and the cotter pins. I can't see, or imagine, what their use might have been. The roll pin was, down from the shift knob 'bout six inches, orientation was left to right. Cotter pin 'bout 4" lower, orientation was front to rear. At first glance, looked like the shifter shaft was more than one piece. Never saw a multiple piece shifter shaft and, this 520-8 shaft certainly is one piece. OK so I'm a little confused but, not lost. Good morning Sir.

TT-(Moderator) 1,145 #7 Posted February 22, 2013 What you have is a shift lever for the newer models with the neutral safety switch. (like the 315-8) If you want to see it on an IPL: http://www.partstree.com/parts/?lc=toro_consumer&mn=73450%2C+GT+Classic+Garden+Tractor%2C+2005+%28SN+250000001-250999999%29&dn=3353258B-_3140014-0009
Kelly 1,029 #8 Posted February 22, 2013 I was thinking something like that TT, but didn't want to say for sure, I've never seen one in person.
Tankman 3,518 #9 Posted February 22, 2013 Thanks again Kelly. Just thrilled that I don't need 'em! Gotta run, got to pick up some fixin' parts, cleaner, oil, rags, all that stuff. Grandson is comin' over for a couple of days, he needs to be busy. "Hey Christian, you didn't wipe down the Stallion's fenders. Get choppin'!" (He loves it!) BarnFoyer.jpg BarnExterior.jpg Oh, so you're just getting started on the restoration? Seriously, Tankman, you can't imagine how much I love these old Pennsylvania barns. One of these days I know I'm going to be out on my motorcycle cruising around the countryside, and I'll see your flag and have this vague feeling I've seen this place before. Keep up the good work! Tankman 3,518 #11 Posted February 22, 2013 Thanks tunahead72! As far as the pins go, they're gone. Don't need 'em. A little more work today on the Horse. This 520-8 is a power BEAST!. A bit hungry for gas too but, that's OK with me!
Tankman 3,518 #12 Posted February 23, 2013 Thanks Terry. Now I know what they were for. Perhaps the shifter was R&R'd before I took possession. Was real easy to replace the boot (shifter dust cover) without something in the way. The old boot was cracked badly, allowed rain and melting snow into the tranny. I ran the tranny, put it in a heated area and let it drain for a couple of days. I used 85w140 gear lube, don't know if that's proper but, my other manual Horses run fine. The Stallions are always stored indoors. Any pro's and con's?
